hi guys,

i`m off to silverstone next friday for the moto gp practice.

i`v never done any motorbike work or been to silverstone so i`m after any tips from people who have.

i`m not sure what setting to use or where to start the day off around the track.

i will be taking my sigma 120-400 f4 and my sony 70-300f4.

Depends on the weather, so adjust ISO level to compensate to achieve the shutter speeds (ISO 100-400 not much difference), but for bikes, these tend to be faster than the average motorcar race, so start with a shutter speed of around 1/400 sec i.e rule of thumb 1/focal length of lens 400mm lens 1/400 sec shutter speed that should get you started, of course you can increase or decrease this. Silverstone's not a great circuit for photography, lots of fences, but there are several places to get decent shots. Just before the old start finish straight (Luffield / Woodcote), Becketts, Chapel and Abbey/Farm Curve, but for most you'll need the 400mm or more.

iv just been on google maps,i`m liking the look of the stand at Luffield.

can i ask if i sit on the front row will i be high enough to see over the fence ??

thanks for your help peter.

It might be because the "I'm going to Silverstone for a major event, any tips?" type of thread has been done a lot and people aren't too keen on typing the same things over and over again. If you do a search on Silverstone there should be plenty of information.

Even as an accredited photographer Silverstone is a bit of a pain, as both the track and runoff areas are quite wide, meaning that where a 200mm lens worked at most circuits I tended to hire a 400mm for trips to Silverstone (I shoot cars, it'l be more pronounced on bikes). Also at the big events it will be difficult to get near the best places to photograph from, my advice would be to get to an event at a local circuit and practice first.

Even on practice/qually days the circuit gets pretty bussy & most togs know the best spots to shoot from & these get very crowded. The big problem with silverstone is the large run of areas, so unless you have some serious glass like I have its a real pain to get some good shots.Your 120-400 should be OK for a few spots, I would recomend Vale as a good starting point. You can stand just infront of the grandstand overlooking pit lane, this give enough hight to shoot the bike over the catch fencing.Brookland & Luffield are also good with a 400mm & you can practice your panning skills as the bikes are going pretty slowish compaired to 200mph down Hanger Straight. If the access lane by the new loop section is open this provides some good views of Maggots & Becketts & the entry into Aintree as well as exit from the Loop.My advise wold be just to walk around the track & look for some new & different angles to shoot from & not stand in one spot taking the same picture over & over like some people I know.

thanks for your help guys
