Keith what batteries does it use? I have a spare charger for a 5D but I don't know if they're the same.

LP-E4 battery

Your charger costs £500?

LC-E4 Charger for LP-E4 battery, 1D MK III: WHE £305.99 backorder.
LP-E4 battery, 1D MK III: WHE £122.99 in stock.
£428.98. OUCH!
My sympathies. Any chance of getting her to cough up?

you could buy a second hand mk2 with charger and battery for not much more than that (MPB)

I'd say try ebay...

.... and when you've auctioned the mother in law , you might have enough to buy a charger

I think you should claim on your household insurance?

Jeeez, frick that ! nearly 500 quid for a simple charger ? you could buy a damn decent mid spec camera for that.
Don't know that i could begin to ask for that much for a replacement, imagine the look you'd get when you say 3 figures

Keep an eye on ebay. Over the past couple of weeks there have been original chargers sold for between £23 and £87. One on there at the moment still at 99p but 6 days to go.

Or there are non-originals - £49 with battery in UK or £18 charger only from China.

That's the reason I let no-one near my camera gear that doesn't know about cameras. My wife has lost numerous chargers and every time she needs it asks to borrow mine so I charge her battery and then give it back and take my charger wire.

I'd go the ebay route though. Should get one for a much more reasonable price there.

If you're stuck Keith, I can get a genuine Canon LC-E4 charger in France for £288 delivered (and in stock)

Bob

Jeez. I have a sis-in-law who goes around putting anything she doesn't recognise into the bin. I've had to recover my passport from the bin in the past, I kid you not.

I'd put the m-i-l in the bin. If she finds her way out, tell her the chargers are no longer available and she owes you a new 1D :D

Get her to pay it, she'll soon learn not to mess with your gear when you throw a £500 bill at her!!

No way would I let her get away with that!

OP to respond - or drowning his sorrows - or the MIL, better yet!

I'm glad that I'm still single, I knew having a wife was expensive but when you add in the mother-in-law!!!

How come you haven't killed the MIL yet?

She pays or dosen't come into the house again........ or is this a wind-up?:cuckoo:

Rather than taking a raft of chargers on holiday, ai now take a universal one which does all my camera batteries, mobiles and AA/AAAs. IIRC, it's a Uniross MagicCharger and came from MyMemory via Amazon.

Cant help on this, but I feel your pain!

charges and conditions 2x 12v LP-E4 batteries at the same time via mains or car power (with optional connector)

Still that is a lot of money for something rather simple really. Someone is making a he'll of a lot of money out of this.

I pity the op, guess the mil now has a bounty on her head!?

Here's what to do. You tell her what the original charger costs to replace and let the shock sink in for a while. Then you tell her you've found a compatible one that's considerably cheaper, at say, for example, £100 [or more, if you want to punish her]. She coughs up willingly while you get the £12 one. A win-win situation.

I suppose in the situation I'd feel a bit done out of it if I had to replace my official Canon charger with a third party brand which might not be as good. If your MIL had any morals though she'd have offered to cough up right away and replace it for you.

No response from OP, held by police on a murder charge?

wife's kicked him out for upsetting mummy and now he has no interweb access ?

thing is with these "compatible" chargers is that every now and again the LP-E4 battery needs conditioning to keep its health up. compatibles dont seem to offer this so potentially you could go through batteries a lot quicker.

Maybe but after saving that much on the OEM version you can probably afford a couple of spares ;)
