Which free email/webmail is currently reckoned to be the most reliable? I need a backup for PC and laptop only in the event of our ISP experiencing a major JCB/cable interaction event, alien intervention or whatever.

I've used gmail for several years now running my main email accounts. No issues, good android apps as well.

Gmail for me too, reliable and simple to navigate.

OK, that's me sorted. Cheers chaps :)

Gmail is good, also good on phones.

Gmail is the best, we get a lot of people in work who have had their Yahoo and Outlook/Hotmail accounts hacked. Make sure you setup the full security options when signing up in case you ever need to recover the account :D

I've been using Yahoo since the beginning 1998 and it has been rock solid since. many ppl do not like the interface but for me it works.

Gmail, on the other I get a lot of spam.

I have several Gmail accounts - always found it very reliable and straightforward to use. I have several Outlook accounts too - grabbed first-name/last-name emails for all the immediate family when it was first released, and they are set up on my iPhone but largely dormant. Had some teething issues with those, but they seem to have been sorted now. I hate the Yahoo and Hotmail interfaces.

Gmail is great if you are OK with paying the Google tax (they will mine your email to advertise stuff at you). Remember if you're not paying for a product, you might be the product :)

Having said that, I do use Gmail at work and home. I definitely recommend using their 2-factor authentication for additional security.

Gmail + Nexus phone. Just jump on the google wagon and don't look back!

I was going to say hotmail..........

...however, I just tried to change to another hotmail account and it came up with "detected unusual location and need to verify your account.

Fair enuff, I am in Cocoa Beach but will it let me into the other hotmail addy to get a code........

......will it [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER]!

What a stupid, stupid setup!

I use gmail for my backup accounts, no issues. I have my main accounts setup in Apple's mail, and gmail in Outlook for extra insurance. It's useful that they are all imap for syncing across phone and computers.

Alternatively you can just setup an alternative route MX record and a second mail responder at lower priority for your primary domain. That way you keep the same level of professionalism. Considering a shared hosting Linux box costs less than a single ride on the Tube that is what I do.

If you are concerned about your own privacy, sign up for a proton mail account.

IT's all about gmail for me - brilliant archiving and search functions.

Oh, and seamless integration with things like iTeleport and whatnot

Who would you recommend?

In the UK I use urbanservers for shared hosting. They utilise a data centre in Hemel Hempstead.

For a cheap dedicated server I use ovh for several years now with great success. But to get the best price I had to use a data centre in France.

I reroute my mx records to both data centres above.

Then with hetzner in Germany I've got a few dedicated servers. That has proven to be incredibly reliable over the years.

the questions should sound like:
2nd most reliable free email/webmail (Gmail #1)?

:)

used google for 10 years now, it might had some little issues when it was launched, but don't recall any problems in the past few years. rock solid.

Gmail fr me, then outlook....

You know, I think we'd do ouselves a favour staying away from the dominant forces that provide email. For instance, what is Microsoft's answer to ensuring the emails I send them from my own mail server dont get spammed? I pay ReturnPath $200 to apply for a certification. This even though my domain/IP hasnt ever been blacklisted. I use SSL with certificates on my SMTP server. SPF and DKIM. The big boys are pushing the small players and independents out of the game.
