my setup is canon 7d
speedlite 430 exii
canon 18-200mm
canon 100mm macro usm lens

week 1 - direction

instead of a directional sign i thought about using a compass and wanted to create a partial blurred effect to say that sometimes we dont know know where we are going - or sommat to that effect. well anyway here it is.....

week 5 - secure
using a padlock can secure things so in this example i wanted to play with lighting and try the wireless functions of the 430ex and the 7d and trying to create a dual shadow effect, this is best i could do after a lot of attempts:

Hi ya & welcome to the nut house......

Sounds like you have the same problems I have with technique & knowledge...I'm sorely lacking in both dept's

I'd love to comment on your images but - on my screen- they're so blooming large I can't see the whole thing...maybe just me ?

Just logged out & rechecked your thread...images showing just fine but the minute I log i they go mahooooosive ??

I'm quite liking your take on Direction & certainly get where you're coming from...I rarely know where I'm going let alone how to get there :-) Like the crop , the angle , white whites...yup thumbs up from me :-)

Secure....focus seem's ok , shame you clipped the very bottom of the padlock body though...& the flare to the right is a touch eye-drawing...you have however , suceeded with Dual shadows so well done you

Money...tis always difficult to make simple objects interesting so I like the idea of the bridge you've made with the silver coins possibly acting like a river flowing under it:-) What len's were you using for this shot ? I only ask cos the focus looks a little odd....the far edge of all the coins seems to be in focus as opposed to the front edges - deliberate or ?

Are you gonna try n catch up with all the weeks ? A touch of insanity works well with this challenge I find :-)
Look forward to seeing more of your shots ,Cheers

hi
thanks for your comments.

direction - no cropping just taken with the 100mm macro lens, angle helped to get the blurry effect..

secure and money taken with 18-200 on manual focus so thats where i kinda messed up a bit! camera was on tripod but the locking nut a bit loose!! so that needs fixing!!!

i am gonna try and catchup and update this thread as often as i can in between work!!

but thanks so far, really appreciate it!!

Week 8 -Handmade
only thing i could think of was the lego models that the kids build, so here is one. this one i have tried to play about with in photoshop. using various adjustments on temperature, and highlights to try and bring the orange out whilst dulling the worktop. the reflections i thought helped me to mimic the sea? so my first attempt at a bit of post processing creativity!!!

thanks

Welcome you will get better I started late too but not as late as you so good luck

I like direction but would like to see more of it in focus.

Secure the light in the bottom right is distracting

Money you have focused on the back edge of the coins looks a bit odd

Joy i can see why she gives you joy, but too close a crop maybe

Handmade is good I like that its mostly blue and grey with the splash of orange and well composed.

Small i see what you are doing trying different things is good but the focus is slightly off and light a bit harsh

you will learn a lot from this site I have, everyones friendly and always willing to help

Good luck

Hi Morpheus :) You're doing well catching up, I'm doing the same myself so know how tricky it can be. Nice going!

Direction - the idea is bang on theme. The colours and framing are good, but I don't think any point of the picture is sharply in focus. I'm not sure if that was your intention? If so I think it needs to be more pronounced to avoid it looking like it's unintentionally OOF.

Secure - as has been said, it's a shame the bottom of the padlock was clipped. I think the focus is a little off here, too - it looks like the very front part of the padlock is OOF, which is fine, except that the background seems to be in focus just behind the padlock, which makes it look as though the plane is shifted a bit. The colour's good though and I think your experiments with lighting are going to produce some very interesting results :)

Money - nice idea, but as Lynne said, the focus looks a little off here too. I thought of a river under the bridge too, so if that's what you were going for, nicely done!

Joy - definitely joyful! Nicely framed and good tone. I'm not sure that the B&W treatment adds to it though? I'd be interested to see it in colour.

Handmade - lovely idea and good interest in the background. Looks like a couple of the highlights are a little over-exposed? Could just be the comparison with the dark BG though.

Small - wonderful reflection, you've got that down! Always handy having a shiny kitchen worktop for these things :) Lovely framing and good colour - it looks a tad orange to me but I know Lightning McQueen toys sometimes come out that way.

Looks like you're doing well, there's some good results up there.

thanks all for your comments. the first 3 shots are slightly OOF because (i) didnt use tripod, (ii) used manual focus (iii) mainly because i never had my glasses on!!
thats why the next 2 shots were better focused.
i will take on board the comments re cropped and framing and especially the extra light on the padlock to get some better shots.
many thanks

I think they're all brilliant without much need to improve

Welcome to the club!! You should enjoy the challenge, it is a challenge at time but very rewarding and good fun. Where else would you take pictures of small potatoes?!?

Small - could have worked for symmetry too! Good reflection but like Allan has mentioned the focus seems a little off.

Handmade - good thinking with lego. Nice shot, good composition.

Joy - simple and effective. Very joyful!

Money - odd focus point, maybe a bit of a rushed shot?

Secure - not keen on this one, maybe the padlock positioned differently.

Direction - nice idea, like the close up shot.

Welcome. You’ve got a lot of catching up to do

Direction – Nice idea

Secure – I’m afraid the subject has been cropped at the bottom

Money – It looks like you’ve struggled to find a focus on this one. I thought you may have been hand holding before I read your reply above

Joy – Bang on theme

Handmade – Not getting the theme but I can see what you have tried to do with the composition on this one

Small – Nice reflections but unfortunately the focusing has let the image down

I like all of those :) there is maybe a small focus issue with direction and money, but other than that, spot on.

Hi and welcome!:) As others have said before the focus is not quite there and on small I would have liked it to be a little smaller in the frame!:)

A good start to the challenge though and you will learn lots from the advice on here!:):)

Hi  welcome to the lunatic asylum

I think most people have said it all, it just seems a slight focusing issue, I have to ask though, why you're using manual focus?

Well done on getting stuck in with your 52, this is definitely the place to learn.
