And I have £200 to which I can add £100 ish I was going to get a new body (have d3000) but I have wanted a Macro lens for ages). What would you recommend????

I really want something that autofocuses.

I currently have 18-55 nikkon 55-200 nikkon 70-300 tamron with macro switch and a raynox 250.

I do have a flash but I haven't used it yet.

Thanks in advance.

Happy birthday, Ive recently purchased the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 new costs about £400.00 but I know you can pick a non UK spec newbie for £360.00, I would imagine you could pick a second hand model up for your price range.
Lovely sharp lens with wonderful colours and Bokeh, My last two posts on this forum were taken with this lens.I am a novice to Macro have a look at my last two posts if you want an idea of what can be achieved with this lens.
It does autofocus well my last two posts were also taken on AF, nice quite motor and fast focusing.
If you stretch to the UK spec newbie Sigma are offering a three year warranty also.

Good Luck.

Happy Birthday Sam, have a good one

Happy Birthday Sam

I have to say _ I love my Sigma 105mm f2.8 macro lens and these can be had for around £220 - £250 second hand, also they make a cracking Portrait lens too

Les

Happy Birthday from me too.

Right as to the lens, Well I shoot with the Sigma 105 its a good lens but I've said it before if I was starting again I'd be looking at the Tamron 90 just to shave some weight off my kit.

Happy birthday Sam, I've been looking into getting a "proper" macro lens myself, the Sigma's & Tamron's look to be good value.

Thanks all and thanks for the move Sarah.

Does the sigma autofocus on the D3000? I didn't think it did??? (motor has to be in lens).

You'll end up using Manual focus most of the time anyway for Macro work.

My understanding is that the Sigma is pretty soft in the corners so personally i wouldn't get that one (not sure about the autofocus issue). The one to get is the Tamron 90mm as it is supersharp across the frame and if you get the right one will AF on your camera (macro is usually done with manual focus but if you want to use the lens for anything else AF is good to have).

Oh, and happy birthday!

Thanks again - have put in an offer on the tamron in classifieds :)

Do you use a Sigma 105mm then????

I dont find the Simga soft in the corners in any way and I use the 105mm f2.8- its a superb lens for Macro

I only shoot in manual, anyway- so I cannot comment on the AF side

Tamron is a good lens too- good luck with your offer Sam

Les ;)

Thanks all have put in a bid on the tamron in classifieds

Don't know what happened there

Thanks les - if I get images a quarter as good as yours I'll be happy!

Good morning, Happy happy birthday Sam... Tamron 90mm and Sigma 105mm are highly regarded macro lenses.
I hope you get the right one you want...

Thanks - the deciding factor from the reviews was that the Tamron appears lighter?

Yea it is
Sigma 105 is 460g
Tamron 90 is 405g

Might not seem much but if you handhold shots for a few hours I'd love the reduction in weight.

Ahh that macro bug ;)

Raynox 250 (40ukp ish - amazon) on a longer zoomy lens.
The tamron 90, sigma 105, or sigma 150.
Slightly out of price range but you may want to consider : 105 nikkor d (not the vr) think its around 300+ ukp still.

If you win, pls post up some pics :) happy bday!

I've seen a lot of sigma images, it does seem a favoured lens on the macro forum, not so many tamrons.

Let's hope I have made the right decision, is it worth do you all think hanging onto the raynox? Also would I NEED a ring flash or will my Jessops 360 do the job? It does have a diffuser.

I wouldn't worry about your lens choice.

Hmm for me personally I'd stick to the flash gun and yea hang onto the filter you never know what you could cobble together with it.
