Hi,

Time has come round again to renew the insurance and I'm trying to find out whether anyone has claimed on their standard accidental damage for camera equipment.

I spoke with one of their team this morning and I'd be covered for accidents in the home (or away as I have that too), but then I thought I'd clarify with them that if one of my sprogs broke it that it would be covered and this person said cameras we'rent covered in the standard policy at all!

As you can imagine I'm not at a bit of a loss.

Now none of my equipment is worth over £1500 individually so the vagaries of their policies aside I should be good.

Ta,

John

I'd watch the value thing. Some insurers consider cameras to be a 'system' and won't cover parts of that system, they want to cover the whole thing.

Ie, you need to specify items over £1500, your body is £1200, lenses at £1000 and £700 and a flash at £300 so you think it's all under the £1500 cut off but really you should specify your 'camera system' with value £3200.

I checked that part and with them each item is separate - I asked that specific question and have had it confirmed as it was a worry to me.

a couple of years ago a small child pulled my D60 with 55-200 lens attached from a table my household policy with Barclays paid out less £100 excess with no problem

1D2 - that's £5.2k as far as they are concerned (like for like to 1Dx). I know it's silly and that's how they make money.

Insurance generally has a 'single article' limit. This usually is £1500. Therefore any item lost, stolen, damaged under that value is cover as a single article. Body, lenses, tripods, flashes ect are all seen as single articles. So a single claim can be made for each item.

However, the loophole or grey area is, if you were to have your kit bag stolen while out and about and the value of the kit in the bag is £5000, your pretty much stuffed.

You'll also find that most general home insurers won't cover cameras under a 'normal' policy. You'd normally have to list your kit in its entirety, e.g £xxxx for all the photography equipment you own.

It is a grey area and not many brokers know exactly the clauses behind the cover involved.

I've worked in insurance for 5 years now and it's always different for each insurer. You need to be asking your insurer in plain English if your kit will be covered as I've mentioned above. And if they confirm that it is, always take note of the advisors name and the time/date of the call just in case it turns out your actually not covered. Calls to FSA regulated companies are normally recorded

I asked about that part too, as the 1D3 is no longer made and the 1D4 is £3500, they said they'd give me £1500 to make sure I could get a replacement second hand.

gstanley, thank you for that advice I'll be sure to tomorrow when they give me a call back.

The Halifax paid out for my 7d when it fell off the table and the body cracked. In fact as it was just after the tsunami and getting one was rather tricky they gave my the max they could and I put it towards a camera lens kit. And they didn't even collect the broken camera!

Thanks all - for clarity I have again spoken with More Than (three people now) and you DO need the upgraded accidental cover for cameras and of course the additional away from home if its out of your house.

Annoying as last year I asked specifically about cameras out of the home, so something I was misled on last year (so I've been running lucky!!)

The only claim I have ever made for camera gear was on my household insurance, don't recall which one it was as I change my insurance provider regularly, anyway It was a Canon 50mm1.4 that flew out my unzipped bag as i picked it up and it hit the tiled kitchen floor turning it and the Hoya Pro 1 filter into scrap.

They said they would replace it with new, however I later received an emal stating their suppliers did not have one in stock and would I consider a cash alternative, I hastily accepted this as their offer was for full retail price for both the lens and the filter!!

Was I pleased they had none in stock :D

That's a result!

However, they can't force you to accept a replacement, you can insist on the cash. Ombudsman ruling...

Camera with lens jumped from my bag on my back to the hard pavement of a railway station... lens took the brunt.

Was insured with Photoguard. they covered the cost to fix. No quibbles.

However they also have some vague terms in the contract so I swapped to Tower Gate. At least the terms were a lot clearer.

Around 300ukp per year ish, including travel (worldwide I think although only 40 days in 3 months abroad). Covers all my kit in the sig including 250gb hd... Haven't needed to claim so not sure how good they'd be at paying out, however the chap I spoke with about a quote was very helpful.

Might be worth just calling for quotes..?

So in 3-4 years you may have paid for your kit twice - or each lens every year!

More Than :gag:

I thought the name of the thread was because you wanted more than just accidental cover.

Think More than have a few words missing from their name like More hassle Than it's worth, you're going to have to pay us More Than that etc etc
