So I recently did a photoshoot with my wife
www.flickr.com/photos/62198876@N02/sets/72157636024662046/

I'm already thinking about the next one, grey/white wig with blue/silver makeup and then maybe a blue gel to light up the background. (haven't got any gels other than the orange one that came with the 600ex-rt)

I'm coming a bit stuck though since I only have 2 x 600 EX-RT at the moment.. (used with reflective and shoot through umbrellas)

Are there any suggestions on how I could move forward?

I'm thinking I could use two extra lights? one for the hair rim lighting and one for the background. It might however make more sense to buy mains powered strobes that are probably cheaper than another pair of flashes..

If you're planning to move forward with studio type work, then mains powered flash is a no-brainer, you get much more bang for your buck.
Steer clear of the cheapest makes as the power is less adjustable than they promise, a good starter 2 head system will cost less than another 600ex rt. But a decent sized octobox and a beauty dish will soon eat your pennies.

It's a competitive market, read reviews and choose carefully though.

Thanks Phil, I was trying to find out whether I could use my ST-E3-RT with strobes, and a solution I found was

"It's easy to mix with studio strobes. If you use the ST-E3 to trigger a 600EX being used as a hairlight or something, the 600EX will then optically trigger a studio strobe in a softbox or whatever."

Is there a best way to use 2 x flash 2 x studio strobe? for main, fill, hair, background.

I don't know about a 'best way' But I'd use the mains flashes for key and fill and use the flashguns for the incidental lights. The flashguns will want to be set on Manual then the single flash will optically trigger the studio flashes. Do you have the ST E3?

With some imagination you can do quite a lot with not too much fancy kit!

The rosco strobist gels are relatively cheap and they can be used with flash to light backgrounds. I have a mixture of speedlights and studio heads. I had a play a little while ago with three speedlights with one gelled onto the background - my Flickr has the shots and the set up (can't link them on my mobile at the mo) although you could substitute the lower fill light for a reflector (hence use two rather than 3 lights)

An hoping to mix speedlights and studio heads this weekend if I get some time!

I like your flickr, loving the hat shots :) it's given me an idea - since I think Louise has hats and a coat I like...

Hats are ace (I love them!) but can make lighting less straightforward as you get shadows under the brims of hats.

Look forward to the results!
