Hoping to get out tomorrow night to get some moonlit scenery, anybody got any tips on anything really. I'm not gonna be shooting the moon just stuff illuminated by the moon, going up to Dartmoor hopefully so it'll be very dark except moonlight.

Thanks,

Gary.

Make sure you stay safe. Would advise letting someone know roughly where you are going and what time you should be expected to be back at.

No point getting great images if you're not about to show them.

Tonnes of batteries, for your long exposures. And a flask of hot soup ;)

This is a coincidence. I'm hoping to get up onto Dartmoor tomorrow evening as well. Moon is on full beam and the weather report suggests a clear night. I intend pointing my lens at the Merrivale stone rows. Where are you heading for Gary?

Take a good strong torch, you can use it to focus by. Wrap up warm, and keep an eye on your lens for condensation forming.

Did I mention wrapping up warm?!

Cheers Mark, I've bought a better torch today and a little fan to hopefully combat condensation, and as for wrapping up warm that's not a problem, I'm always out in the cold, quite used to wrapping up :D

Thanks for your concern Johnny :), there's gonna be two maybe three of us so we should be alright.

Got four batteries all fully charged, hopefully that will surffice

Not sure yet Stuart, I'll be out with a friend who's knowledge of Dartmoor is far superior to mine so I'm gonna be taking his lead....I think he has a plan .....Well, I hope he has a plan :D

A good one is getting the reflection in a spacesuit visor. And try to get some with your lander in the background.

Should be plenty of big puddles about up there for reflections (but beware of the deep bogs!).

If you need to ramp the ISO up beyond your normal noise threshold, consider a B&W conversion - IMO, B&W grain is more easily tolerated than colour noise.

If the Moon is in the right place (Southish from your shooting position) consider a moonlit tor (or stone row/circle/whatever!) with star trails behind it.

Keep any spare batteries in pockets where they'll stay warm.

Locations you seem to have sorted - maybe you could try keeping reasonably close to the road/carpark to reduce any chill posibility. It's all too easy to let the cold get through to you when standing around waiting for the light.

Beware of doggers! No idea if or where they congregate but I'll bet there are some around up there and I doubt they take kindly to randoms with cameras...

Beware of condensation on and in your kit when you get home. If possible, leave it somewhere cool and dry to gradually come up to normal temperature, maybe with a bowl of uncooked rice beside it to absorb any moisture in the air. Plenty of more detailed advice on the forum and elsewhere on the interweb.

If there's a road in shot, consider keeping an eye out for vehicles heading towards the frame and catching a light trail.

Beware of bogs, dogs and the beast!
