What should I be looking for? I already have a decent tripod, but I dont always want to take that out. Ideally I want something retractable and a decent strength, for the cheapest price, since I dont think il be using it too much.

Weight isn't an issue so I don't need carbon fibre or any of that jazz either.

Thanks guys.

Giottos MM5570 sturdy as hell.It also doubles as a tripod and is superb for macro work.

Anything wrong with a Hama?

Manfrotto 679 here.
great monopod for the money.

Manfrotto 685B for ease of quick height changes and I've the Giottos Series MH 1300 - 621 ballhead for quick release as well. Not the cheapest but a great combo.

Best bet is to get to a shop and try a few to see which feels strong enough for you, extends to a comfortable height for you etc. If you already have and use a tripod, it could be a good idea to make sure the QR systems are at least compatible, if not the same. This can be changed with a different head but that's extra (possibly unwelcome) expense.

I used to use a Jesspos own brand monopod but changed to a Manfrotto (model # forgotten) with a 234RC2 head to allow quick landscape-portrait shifts when using a lens without a collar and to standardise the QR system.

or a 680

as long as it's a Manfrotto (unless you want to spend £££ on a Gitzo :naughty:)

Happy with Manfrotto 680B here

This is purely personal opinion here chaps but I'd probably take the 681B over the 680B. The 680 is a four-sectioned mono and the 681 is a three sectioned, you'd be surprised the difference is rigidity between the two, not to mention the 681 is a tad lighter.

I'm going to seem very amateurish, but I picked up my monopod for only a tenner from Amazon. Now, it's not a Manfrotto. It's actually not any sort of known brand. It has no quick release. It isn't made from carbon fibre. It doesn't even have a removable head. But it's a tenner. Comes with a bag, and a foot rest. It extends to over 6ft, and collapses to around 4ft. It seems durable enough, and seems to be able to support a nice heavy lens. You can't really go wrong with it.
