Do you guys find it helps when shooting motor sport at about 120mm in the daylight?

I went for a panning session the other day, and the slower shutter speed I could do was 1/100 and even then, 90% of those were blurred.

Would a monopod help me at all, or isn't it going to make a difference?

If I think about it, I'm pretty sure it'd help... But I may be wrong.

Any recommendation for a particular monopod?

I think I'm gunna go with a 680B...

Would anyone suggest the 790B over this, saving £20? What's the difference?

Also, what's the difference between this and the 681B?

Do I really need a head, or can I just attach this straight to my 450D? I can't imagine how a head would help if you're constant moving the angle for motor sport. Surely since it's only one leg, you'll be able to lean it forward and backward anyway, or am I picturing this all wrong?

You probably want a head, most likely a ball head.
I have a Velbon RUP-43 (comes with a ball head) and it's been of some help when doing macro or 'birding' (mostly seagulls and sparrows). I can only attach it to the body, though.
You will be able to lean with it, but you have to remember to press slightly(!) against the tripod for extra stabilisation, which isn't quite easy (but possible) when leaning. You'll probably be in a bit of a squat if you'll need to lean it (works for me).

I can't help you with the Manfrottos, sorry.

680B will take 10kg whilst the cheaper 790B is only rated at 1kg (the 681b has a 12kg max load).
Once you've chosen the correct weight bearing capactiy then you need to considered the height of the thing....there's nothing worse than having to stoop down, ruins the stabilty and you'd be better off without one if it's not a comfortable height.

Cheers guys.

Why wouldn't it be any good for panning? Surely it'd provide more stability and I could just rotate on the pivet?

How does the quality of Giottos monopods compare to those of the Manfrotto ones?

With a long lens (300mm +) Monopods can work really well for the pan shot - however not many pans happen in that range!

Good panning technique is to line yourself up with the approximate location where you plan on firing the shutter, then twisting to the direction where the subject is coming from. It is then a very natural movement from initial pan to firing position.
Try that with a monopod...

Pods are great for the cornering shots though, keeps everything so much more steady.

I bought one of the redsnapper tripods two weeks ago. I love it, and today I ordered one of their monopods + ball head combos, plus one of their bigger ball heads. I expect I will be very pleased with them. Search for reviews on here... and I believe they give a discount as they are a forum sponsor.

For panning I would handhold, gives you much more freedom to track the subject better, and you can react quicker if something happens unexpectedly. Also and 1/100th you are going to get a lot of failed shots, partly this is down to improving the technique, which will only get better with practise and mainly due to the slow speed of the shutter, at this sort of shutter you will throw away a lot of shots, its just the way it is.

Had a good day testing new gear at cadwell. Panning takes practice practice practice. Never thought about a monopod to improve.
