Who uses a monopod for motorsport & would you say it works better using one?
I am debating as to getting one or not.:)

I used to use one, but unless you're using a huge lens it shouldn't really be required. If you're up at Knockhill on a Sunday and want to try one let me know and I'll bring mine along

I don't bother usually, but have hired a 400mm for the weekend so will take my monopod just incase.

What lens do you use. I use one, more so this year since twisting my back months ago (still painful), but for a lot of shots I take it off.

Have you seen the Calumet Minipod? Quite a handy wee thing for a tenner.

I use the monopod mainly when shooting 300/420/510mm as my 300f4 is not VR and the rough guide of focal length vs shutter speed usually finds me on the wrong side of "typically able to handhold".

If messing around with the big stuff (300 2.8 or similar mahoosive glass) I'd say it was almost certainly required if you are going to get consistent shots and/or no back pain!

My two associates who use the 300 2.8 (and maybe TC's) always use the monopod but belt mounted, which I don't, I stick to sticking it on the floor.

I've got one, but don't use it that much, I guess it would be useful if you had a long/heavy lens.
I find it very useful for longer panning though as you only have to turn the camera and it reduces the shake a little.

Dion!

I will be at knockhill on the sat 13th,cant make the sunday as the wife has other plans,(sob).
I usually use my 70-300mm IS lens when i am there,i suppose if i could try one out to see if it works for me would be great, will hold off buying one just now i think.:)

Meant to add earlier, its really only useful if your lens has a tripod ring on it. Sticking the camera body on the mono pod is pretty useless...

Cheers for that.

So i will have to borrow the tripod ring as well as the monopod.:D:woot:

:thumbs::clap::woot::woot:

Cheers fastworldimages:)

for the sake of spending £20 i brought one and used it on a circuit however found it akward. i did like the fact it took the weight of the camera when waiting around.

I usually use one with my 300 prime firstly to take the weight off and secondly to smooth out more of my pans. I don't consider it a disaster if I forget it though - ones of those bits of kit which is handy but not entirely necessary I find.

Thanks guys.:)

some good posts as I am off to silverstone in a couple of weeks I was thinking the same thing, will be using a 300F4 and 70-200 IS

Good luck with it rickj:)
