Hi All,

I've decided to invest in a monopod, but don't know which type and which type of attachemnt would be better.

I have a Sony A580, with a variety of lenses including the 70-400mm which is quite heavy, so I'm not convinced a monopod would suit that.

My questions are:

Do I go for a quick release head or a ball & socket?

Can anyone recommend a monopod?

Thanks
Sian

My budget is under £100 for both ideally, if they are more expensive than that, then I'll have to save up

Oops, damn that post quick reply button!

Thanks Andy

Thanks for that John

Hi Sian,

I have been looking at various options and have decided to get a Giottos one; the MML3260B. This is because i am short; they do the 3270 and 3290 versions as well.

I bought the Manfrotto 234RC head after reading recommendations on here. There is a 234 which is cheaper but this one doesn't have a quick release plate like the RC version.

Have a google at prices but i think both items would be around £60.

Also worth having a look at some options if you can get to a shop; like all purchases, personal preference plays a huge part in these things!

Best wishes,

Tracey

Thanks James & Tracey

Any of the monopods are good - I've got a Giottos one which seems excellent.
A ballhead with a quick release is a good pairing since you can clip the camera on/off easily as well as easily position the camera.

The mistake I made was getting too small/light a ballhead so I'd be nervous about the redsnapper mini ballhead, especially if you're putting a large lens on it.

I've now got the Giotto MH1302-652 which is super-solid... The MH7002-652 I had before seemed to slip too easily with a long lens + heavy body combo.

Ingrid on this forum has the same monopod but an amazing one-hand grip ballhead from Manfrotto - rock solid but I personally prefer mine since I can set the friction so it's movable rather than locked in place.

Hi Peter, sorry to divert from Sian's topic but do you know what the model number of the one grip ball head is please?

Thanks very much.

I think Ingrid's was this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0018QOGNW/
It's a beast but very nice... although there are plenty of other heavy-duty ball heads which you can opperate with one hand without a problem.

I got the redsnapper with ball head, great combo for the money

I have the Red Snapper monopod and head also. While I am happy with the monopod (some say it's a bit heavy but I've not used any others for comparison) the head, less so.

The head really needs winding up to lock the ball well and there's no friction clutch so you have to balance it on the lock lever. I use this as my main head on my tripod also so will be getting a better one at some point with separate locking, friction and pan knobs.

That said for the money I really can't complain other than the lock knob sometimes hits the QR clamp which is a touch annoying.

Don't forget TP members get 10% off if you look in the traders section for the code.
