just starting out in the world of photography and getting some kit together
have on order a canon 40d with 17-85 and 70-200 F4L
was wondering if its worth getting a cheap and cheerful monopod? do people tend to use them a lot? are they handy to carry around?
there some ive seen on a certain auction site with quick release for about £15 shipped
 
I got a Manfrotto from Jessops for £43 - after the camera, probably the most useful bit of kit in the bag
remember to put it on the lens (70-200) not the camera as it keeps it better balanced

don't ask how I know :thinking:
 
Ceap and cheerfull is OK, but you'll get much more use and joy from a good on. I used a cheap Cullman one for years. Recently I bought a Manfotto 685B (the automatic one) and I wish I'd coughed up and bought one years ago. It's easier to use and I like to use it and therefore I use it more.

One thing to watch for is hight. It can be uncomfortable using a monopod that is too short, and many on the cheap ones are quite short. Also, make sure that the one you buy can hole the wieght of your gear; and bear in mind that there will be extra weight on it because you'll be pressing down on it a little too when you use it.

It also gives you something to lean on when you're hanging round waiting! hahaha

I got a basic Star 42 tripod for £9 from George (Asda Shop) and it works fine. Just goes to show you don't really need expensive tripods, when a £9 one works fine.

Yes you are right. But sometimes it can be worth it to pay a bit more to get something thats perfect. Although I spent years happily using a £15 one and didn't really know any better. But I'd struggle to go back to it now. :-)
