hi guys, got a few questions for you all,
I'm looking into buying a monopod and i have a few things to consider.
a) how long will a monopod extend to? as i am 6ft3" and i need a monopod that i dont have to bend over (e.g. it reaches where my face is!)
b)what sort of weight are the larger monopods?
c) really tight budget - around £30
d) im not really looking to buy on ebay. i prefer local shops (jessops or other etc..)

Thanks in advance for any help

Dion!

i have the manfrotto 680 plus 234RC2 head, but i'm not sure it will suit you at 6'3".also,i would recommend you get a decent one as it will last you years, but unfortunately,£30 may not cover it.places like argos do cheap monopods, but i wouldn't like to trust one with my DSLR on it...

take a look here...generally the cheapest place for manfrotto monopods and tripods...

thanks, i guess i could save a bit, but i only work 2 shifts a week because ive got my GCSE's coming up so im studying etc. etc.

how tall are you, does your manfrotto have to get you to bent slightly ?

Thanks,

Dion!

oops sorry...didn't realise you were still in school :bonk:

i'm 5'11",so a little shorter than yourself, but i don't have to bend over when the monopod is fully extended.there is a slightly longer version available, which will be listed on the above link..and that may suit your needs

cheers, had a look at the link, but they all seem so expensive.
Is there such a thing as an extender of some sort for a monopod?

thanks for link.

Dion!

I made a 30cm extension for mine. Quite simple to do using a length of nylon (30mm think) and then insert a stud into one end and a captive nut in the other.

I'm 6' 2" & use a Jessops 330 Monopod with my 30D / Sigma 70-200 F2.8 (fair bit of weight)

The QD plate isn't the best in the world but I'm always holding the camera anyway :D

*monopods fall over if you don't hold them ;)

** ask JoeT

Joe / Redsnapper sells a monopod - Last time I looked it wasn't on the interweb (can't check at work) so you'd have to pm or phone him so ask about extended length - If the quality matches their tripod it will be as good as you'll find in your budget ... Paul
PS - There's a monopod in For Sale Forum iirc (seller = ditchdigger)

Your camera needs to be at eye level - subtract partial height of the camera, then subtract height of the head you choose to use and this is the height of the monopod needed. An extension could easily be made.

thanks for all your replies guys.
Didn't notice there were so much different monopods for sale.

i'm now quite tempted to go for the jessops 330 that mrgrubby has.
i guess at £20 i couldn't go wrong, and if it was a bit short i could make an extension like canon bob has done?

(have you got any pictures of it canon bob?

Thanks, Dion!

I used to a velbon monopod £18 and i'm 6ft 1ish ,never had it fully extended :D

how did you get the bolt and nut to stick into the nylon?
Did you just use a kind of glue or adhesive?

Thanks for going to the trouble of getting me pictures.

My first description was just a simplistic version.
It's a piece of rod drilled and tapped at one end and threaded at the other. It goes right through the nylon which is simply sized to make a comfortable lightweight grip.

Bob

ah, right.
ive got a tap and dye set, so could do something like this i guess.
and, not trying to be annoying but how does the nylon bar get fitted to the monopod itself?

Thanks again,

Dion!

The stud on the monopod screws into the hole in the second shot....this fits on top of the monopod where the head would normally go.

Bob

ok, i get it now!, so the monopod, then the nylon pole then the head?

I automatically thought that the extension was going on the bottom of the monopod.

Thanks,

Dion!

The clue was in the bit where I said the nylon was sized to make a comfortable grip. My monopod (at the time) was tall enough for horizontal shooting but as soon as I pointed upwards then the camera body lowered and stooping was the order of the day.

Bob

7cm

These cheap monopods don't feel very sturdy, especially with a camera and lens combo that is heavy enough to justify it.

I've been very pleased with my Manfrotto. I recently bought a Giottos CF monopod to replace it, and am waiting until my first track event to try it out. Once I've tried it, I'll be selling on the Manfrotto assuming I like the Giottos.

I had a Manfrotto Carbon Fibre one, £100+ and very very poorly made, So much so WEX refunded full amount and I stick with my £28 Manfrotto 679b

Been looking at the Manfrotto 680 and 681 but I noticed that for a bit more I could have the 682B which has the retractable legs, how sturdy are the legs?

I have the 682B. The legs are very good for the extra stability (I have very poor balance) but they are certainly no replacement for a tripod and I wouldn't leave one unattended with a camera mounted. I use it with a 488RC2 ball head and it makes it very good for panning shots.
