As title, can anyone recommend a monopod and ballhead which doesn't break the bank but will support a gripped Nikon D5000 and a Sigma 150-500.

Cheers

I can't speak for how well it'll support the lens because I don't have that one. But I've found the velbon RUP-L43 to be a great monopod for my d5000

Thanks Liam I'll have a look at that.

Got tyhe redsnapper as mentioned above and its a fine cheap mono. I use it with a gripped 7D and 500mm F4 with no issues. Not the ball head though;) Actualy never used the ball head since getting it.

I have just bought a new mono a Giottos MML3290B, it arrived today and I am quite impresed. Will be usefull on the mountains when I need the whole 190cm. I was going to get a Manfrotto 680B but found the Giottos on amazon at a bargain £34 lightly used. However its actualy new with all tags still attached. The box is slightly damaged.

Heres one from the same seller if you fancy a better quality mono that holds 12kg

Reason for changing is the twist locks. I prefer the Giottos and Manfrotto levers.

If you fancy the Manfrotto 680B T4 in Swindon have them new for £50 as do Jessops.

You don't use the ball head?

Does that mean you use a different ball head or just put the lens straight onto the monopod?

Cheers

Personaly I don't get on with ball heads on a mono so use it with the lens mounted straight to it.

When I use the mono I'm normaly in situations that don't require me to use a ball head.

Giottos GTMML 3270B, excellent quality, only £34 delivered from amazon.

Yup, I really need three hands - one to hold the pod, one to hold the camera and one to turn the locking knob. I use RRS's Monopod Head - very expensive but a total dream, even with the heaviest lenses. For light stuff (up to 100-400, 70-200 f2.8) the Manfrotto 234RC2 is OK.

You not tried the Manfrotto 322 on a monopod? I would like to pair it with the Neotec pod but its jumped up in price recently...£130 is a bit too much for a monopod I feel

I have a carbon fibre Velbon (now superceded with the E64) which has been brilliant over the past 5 years or so. Lightish weigh and very strong and a good length too (useful for putting the foot in a hole if required or one step down in a grandstand). Use it with no ball head as the telephotos have the ability to swing the camera from portrait to landscape. Use it with both a Sigma 50-500 and a genuine Nikon 1000mm mirror.

Er, no! Even without my arthritis I wouls still despise joystick heads.

:D Ok I'm not trying to convince you but I have the 322 and its pretty solid, stupidly fast to position and I believe it would be one of the best 'ballhead' on any monopod. One hand controls the friction trigger and positioning the camera and the other hand fires the trigger with a remote shutter release.

I have just bought the 410 geared head and this is very good on the tripod for landscapes and macro:thumbs:

It may be too late, but the Giottos 3270B is £21 now at Calumet: Here

Thanks for that John.

I ended up getting myself a Manfrotto 679B.

I went to a shop to try some out and decided I didn't want to wait for one to be delivered so I bought one there and then.

I brought the manfrotto 680b when I got my siggy 150-500 lens and I have no worries about it not being up to the job, if i remember rightly it was about £60 but well worth the pennies, try the camera world website as they are quite good
