Monopod-Is it worth having?

I don't usually bother if I'm using the 70-300VR but do if I'm using the 150-500; mainly because that's such a heavy lens. For long exposures and landscapes, I use a tripod rather than a monopod.

Well my lens is only a 70-300 VR and the camera a D5000. I suppose what I should ask is, is VR better than using a pod?

I had a D5000 before I got my D300s and used my Sigma 150-500 and Nikon 70-200 2.8, with both camera's.

Shooting rugby I use a monopod with VR turned off. If you've got muscles like Popeye then shooting without the monopod would be fine, but trying to hold up a long/fast lens for 80 mins without a monopod is nigh-on impossible.

I find a monopod incredibly useful when travelling - fits within cabin baggage restrictions. I strap it onto my small camera bag, and even, as happened last October, my main bag with a tripod in it goes missing, I'm still able to shoot immediately. I use a Manfrotto 680B, for the price it is very good, easily copes with my heavy set-up. Clearly not as good as a tripod, but much easier to work quickly with. Technique critical - try and make yourself the missing two legs of the tripod, and you soon get the hang of it. It makes the difference, for me at least, between getting shots and not.

I use one with my sigma 150-500.

Did use one on my tamron 70-300 because it did not have vr/is/os.

Did find it easier for carrying about thou if im honest

With the number of people that have tried and not got on with them and all those in this thread who rate them so poorly there should be a glut on the classifieds I would have thought - or at least every time someone starts a thread "...I'm think of trying a monopod..." there would be loads of people pitching up with, "..I'm nearby... give mine a try and see how you get on.."

;)
