Yes
I've picked up a reasonably priced half decent monopod to experiment with, and am looking for guidance on some sort of quick release head.
I'll be using it with my 300 f4 and maybe a Tamron 150-600- so 2-2.7 kg or thereabouts.

Monopod is one of these Giottos:

Still one left at £30 delivered incidentally.

Looking to spend no more than around £40- but don't mind 2nd hand. Nothing too bulky either- else I may as well take a tripod.

Use will be mainly for larger wildlife in the UK, with perhaps the occasional bit of casual sports shooting.

Thinking along the lines of a tilt pivot head at the mo' something like:

But I'm open to suggestions?

Thanks,

Dan

Thanks Nod- that's 1st choice at the moment- even though it's technically slightly under the max load spec. What lenses are you using on it?

I really can't see the 234RC2 working with the 150-600. I used to use one with the 100-400 and it was OK with that. But it was totally unusable with a 300 f2.8

I doubt that the 234RC would be man enough to hold the equipment you describe. You will get lens creep I'm pretty certain of that.

I know it's well over your budget, but something like the Really Right Stuff MH-01 would be more adequate

Certainly is way over budget! ;)
Any middle ground out there budget/build wise?

I use one with a 500 f4 on a monopod and its fine. Screwed directly into the lens foot it does the job.

Really?

You can put a 500mm lens on a 234 RC2 and there's no drooping at all. I'll believe that when I see that.

Whether you believe me or not is immaterial. I'm passing on my experience. The fact that it differs from yours doesn't make it unbelievable.

Also why would I want the head locked up? If you want to lock the head off why have the head at all, just attach the lens straight to the monopod. But to set your mind at rest if you lock off the head it doesn't droop with a 500 and 1DX on it but I never lock it off because whenever I use it I'm always holding the camera.

I bought it because it only tilts forwards and backwards. I use it with a waist pouch and small monopod to take the weight of the camera and lens. It works well.

I understand if some folk are a bit concerned about the weight loading. I was the same so I put the head on a tripod, attached a square of wood to the 3/8 thread and put 10kgs on the wood and left it for 24 hours. It was fine. I'm quite happy trusting my gear on it but maybe others aren't so buyer beware.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I've gone with just a Manfrotto quick release for the time being to see how I get along.
