really struggling to find a suitable monopod and head for the sigma 100-300/4 and gripped 40d combo.

Sigma weighs in at about 1.44kg, call it 1.5 with bigger tripod collar. 40d is 740g, gripped call it 1kg for good measure.

so 3.5 kg weight, being used for sports, cricket predominantly.

Any help gratefully appreciated

you dont need a ballhead, its a waste of time

any monopod will do, the manfrotto ones are quite good

I use a gripped D300 with the same lens and a 1.4 tc using a Manfrotto 681B monopod with 486RC2 head.

cheers folks, found a manfrotto pod, with free head, and bought the same head but with detachable Q R plate. £60 well spent me think

Cheers
Charlie

My old mans got a CF monopod which extends plenty high enough. Borrowing it for action up the loop and Skomer in July so I'll see how I get on with it.

You wont want a monopod in the loop mate, the pass movements are far to random and varied to use it properly.

Ben, not sure I fancy running a 500mm handheld though ??

We'll see how I get on when I'm up there I suppose.

I use the Manfrotto 685b (the one with the grip that lets you quickly and easily raise and lower the height at will without fiddling around with knobs or levers) with the 234RC head.

With the camera body, grip, 2 batteries, 70-200 f/2.8 VR (or 300mm f/4 AF-S) and an SB-900 on top as a CLS commander, it weighs a good 15lbs or so, and it has no problem handling this load.

To pan left+right, I simply rotate the monopod. To tilt up and down, that's what the 234RC head is for. To rotate between portrait and landscape orientation, I just rotate the whole thing around the tripod collar on the lens. Full 3 way motion and quick easy height adjustments with minimal time and effort, no problems.
