Hi this is my first post here.

I am looking at getting a Monopod and a 3 way head to go with my Nikon D3100 and assortment of lenses including my 70-300. I have a Tripod that I brought years ago and I've been using that but find it can be a pain to use sometimes.

It will mainly be used for motorsport events and car shows (when I'm limited on space in the Mini)

I don't want to spend a fourtune and then find out it doesn't work for me.

Any advise would be greatfully received

Ask yourself whether you really need a monopod with your gear. Why do you feel a monopod would aid you?

I shoot motorsport with a D3 and D800E and lenses from the 14-24 up to 400mm 2.8. Almost everything I shoot is handheld, unless I'm using the 400mm on a very slow shutter speed.

I can't see a monopod aiding you that much with you gear, in fact I find they just get in the way mostly, but each to their own - I'd recommend getting your panning technique developed without the aid of a monopod.

Have to agree. Unless your using heavy gear they do tend to get in the way and its something else to carry.

If you do buy one have a look at the 7day shop ones. I have seen then and there okay for the price, if not good old eBay. If you like it you can always upgrade.

Thanks for your replies thinking about it your probably right and if I didn't buy a monopod and head that means I have a good chunk of money towards another lens (looking at Sigma 10-20s at the moment).....

Yep, same here. Thought it was a good idea to get one, i could see the situations that i would use it in......never do.
For me its the extra thing to carry more than not needing it. I think if you find yourself in enough situations where it could help, then go for it, but if you are buying it just in case then it might be a waste of money.

I find a monopod is invaluable when shooting with a heavy lens e.g 200 - 400m f4 lens, irrespective of shutter speed, as it is so heavy. I also find it easier to carry camera and lens when fitted onto monopod. However for a lightish camera and lens such as D3100 and 70 300 I would use it handheld, especially if it is the VR version.
