Just wondering if anyone can help with a question about combining a monobloc with speedlights. I have a monobloc which is triggered by its built-in radio trigger. However, until I can afford more monos, I'd like to use my SB-600s as hair/rim/background lights.

1. Would this be possible using optical slave hot shoe mounts for the SB600s with the monobloc's flash doing the triggering?

2. Is any one brand of optical slave more reliable than another (that you know of)?

1) Yes.

2) No.

3) :D

Thanks Richard.

You're welcome Tim :) Jessops hot-shoe slave for a tenner works fine.

For Canon users, I could add that optical slaves do not work with some guns and unless you know the problem it will drive you mad. The slave will fire once but then locks up and won't fire again until you turn it off, when it will fire once again...

It's something to do with residual current in the foot and affects the 550EX, 580EX and 430EX. I believe the Mark II versions are fine. You can get the slaves modded to sort this, but it's much easier to just get a cheap radio trigger like the Yongnuo RF-602.

I just bought 2 from ebay at £6 each. Also include a pc sync port so that I could add more flashes with a sync cable (if I needed to).

Hopefully, these will do the trick http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SYK-4-Optical-Slave-Trigger-for-Hot-Shoe-Flash-PC-Sync_W0QQitemZ220502908757QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Photography_StudioEquipment_RL?hash=item3356ff5f55

Downside is that I'll have to wait 2 weeks before they get here.

That looks identical to the ones Jessops sell for a few quid more
