Hi there, (mods please move if wrong location)

Basically not really sure what the best photography monitor is to get. I can't spend anymore than £600 and really less than £500 is much better. I don't want anything larger than 27inch but I think something like 24inch will be better for my office size. I work 99% with landscapes in colour and B&W if that makes a difference to which monitor is best.

Basically looking for any recommendations. At the moment I am liking the look of the Dell Super Sharp 24inch Premier Colour Monitor as so far it seems to fit the bill perfectly: http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&sku=754744

Have a look at the Dell ips range, there is a 24" inside your price range. I have the older 2209wa and am happy with it.

Hi Paul,
Co-incidentally I've asked the same sort of question as you and posted my thread yesterday (title - 24" or 27" for image editing).
So far, i've had some excellent replies and you might find it useful to have a look at them.
Like Kev, I currently have a DELL "Ultrasharp" 2209WA (IPS screen) and have been really happy with it. The only reason I'm looking to upgrade is that with my eyesight not getting any better, I thought a bigger monitor would help!
Amongst others, my current shortlist includes the new 24" and 27" DELL Ultrasharp monitors.

Thanks for the reply guys!

The Dells do generally seem to have some very good feedback from customers. I just seen the other thread similar to this one and see that I should try to get 27inch if I can. This years model of the 27inch is a bit out of my price range with the premier colour but the previous model on Amazon is in my price range(http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dell-U2711-...1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1362071100&sr=1-2). My only worry is the apparent anti-glare issues of the older models.

Right at the top end of your budget sits the fabulous NEC MultiSync P241W. Simply flawless.

Going cheaper, but still superb, you have the Dell U2413.

You then have the Dell U2412M... this is sRGB gamut though, but still excellent.

Cheaper still you have the Dell U2410, old, but great. Wide gamut, 16:10.. ticks all the boxes. It does have a very aggressive anti-glare coating though... kind of makes highlights sparkle a little. weird effect. Not a big deal though.. still a great screen, and can be had for peanuts now.

That pretty much sums up your 24" choices.

With your budget, 27" is pretty much Dell U2711. There's a U2713 model out now, but it may be slightly out of your budget.

Budget for a calibrator though. Recommend the Color Munki Display at around £100.

I thought a bigger monitor would help!

A bigger monitor will not necessarily help, because the idea is higher resolution along with the bigger size, so you'll have more space. Text, menus etc will not be any bigger.

I bought a Dell U2713 HM 27″ widescreen monitor this week and WOW it is excellent. It’s a high spec “WQHD” screen with 2560 x 1440 pixels, which is a lot. The result is a big screen with very fine detail and vast amounts of real estate for picture editing. I hadn’t realised how much my other montiors were until I plugged this thing in. Lightroom looks superb on it. I have a dual-screen video card in my PC so also run a second Eizo monitor, so I can have a really well sorted large workspace which makes editing much more pleasurable. It was also much cheaper than I expected, costing me £430 inc VAT as a refurb (though it looks brand new) from Information Technology Clear (ITC). They are well worth a look if you are after saving a bit of cash (they are £600 + carriage from Dell)

I would recommend EIZO with an IPS based TFT panel and a wide colour gamut.
I have the 24" SX2462W which goes for just over £600 inc Vat (I bought mine from Native Digital) but there are cheaper models out there.

Good screen if he can stretch to it. It's a little outside his budget at around £650 though. I used to have the 30" version.

I am after another monitor as well so will keep an eye on this thread. I did have the DELL "Ultrasharp" 2209WA but that got sent back and replaced with a refurb and as mentioned that one has gone kaput also. I am waiting to see what the LG Ultrawide go on sale for over here. Coming out this Month unless someone knows if they are already in the stores  Looking at them it would do all I want it for.

I bought an ASUS 23" last year which is great http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-031-AS 23" might be a tad smaller than you originally posted? but only 1/2 your budget. Just thought i'd mention it.

I got a spyder calibrator about 6 months later & the monitor was still 99% colour correct.

Just seen they do a 24" too with spyder inc @ £420 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...w=&pup_c=pla&gclid=CMWj25T02bUCFeXKtAodGU8AEQ

Had a look at both screens you linked to and the second one with the Sypder calibration certainly looks perfect and for the money its probably the best considering it includes the calibration stuff. Struggled to see any reviews on that actual model though.

I have heard some great things about the EIZO monitors but they did seem in general pretty expensive. Had a quick look at the model you got and I think its probably a bit out of my budget especially if I get some calibration equipment. Cheers anyway, maybe I can dream for an EIZO monitor one day haha.

Took a look at that website that you mentioned (ITC) and it looks to have some pretty good deals so will have a bit more of a look in the near future. I am becoming more tempted by the 27 inch size screens though!

Thanks very much!! Really good info and run down there. I think the NEC with calibrator though will be a bit pricey but the U2413 could certainly be possible. As I just said a 27inch screen is certainly becoming more tempting which leaves me with basically the U2711. My only worry with the U2711 is that some people seem to moan about the anti-glare coating on the screen. Don't know if this is really an issue or not.

Finally I'm not sure if the premierColor models from Dell are worth the extra cost or not in comparison to their non premierColor models? Or is there effectively no notable difference between the two.

Just had a look at that monitor, looks good and has good reviews and for the price is awesome. My only issue is the fact that it doesn't have a displayport port and only a dual link dvi.

Stop!!!!

Sorry, but sharing the same panel does not mean it is as good.

Crap ergonomics and OSD (just a brightness control.. that's pretty much it). Crap connectivity... just one DVI input, no HDMI, no display port. No height adjustment, no rotate. Very poorly implemented backlighting.

You get what you pay for. Yes, the price is awesome... alas, the screen is not.

Oh yeah stand I did see was only tilt adjustable, wasn't sure if you could buy another stand to replace the default one but then that starts to defeat the purpose of the cheap price. But for the me the lack of connectivity of no hdmi or Display port was the real deal breaker. None the less thanks for pointing out!

Guess the saying of buy cheap, buy twice is ringing in my head a bit haha

I have a Dell 27" SPS U'Sharp and it's superb. I do have a Quadro 600 work station graphics card connected via display port. Even photos taken on a compact look so much better. It supports the new mercury graphics engine in cs6. You can slide big images around beautifully.
