With that sort of budget I'd go for a higher quality smaller (say 24") monitor, say an Eizo or one of the NEC design ones. Unless you really need the bigger screen.

I agree with Craikey. Stay away from TN panels, go for S-IPS, H-IPS or E-IPS in that order.

It looks like Maplin were doing the 26" Acer AL2623W for £399 but their website is throwing up an error when i search. May be worth ringing them.
Or if you drop down to 24", you can get an NEC 24" MultiSync LCD2490WUXi2 from PCbuyit at £520.
