I'm on the look out for a reasonable 27inch ish sized monitor for editing using Lightroom. There seems to be a lot of choices around & all the reviews suggest they are all very good; but surely there is one that's better suited to editing photos?

I'm looking at spending around £200 ish

Any suggestions appreciated , thanks

As above you realy need to be looking at a IPS pannel. A 27" Dell IPS pannel monitor is around the £500-550 so unless you can increase to budget I would look at a smaller size. There are some buget 27" IPS monitor around £325 ish but backup and warranty is poor.

Maybe a dell 24" ultrasharp IPS but I think these are around £300 if this is more than you want to spend there are smaller sizes in the Dell ultra sharp range.

In the for sale section there is a 30" dell going at a great price but again its well over your budget.

Dell U2412M is £250. excellent IPS monitor and with good resolution.

i've got U2711 myself, bought early days of its release (for £800 :o ). at that time, 27inch are averaging £400 with poor resolutions. you really NEED to look at 2560x1440 if you are buying 27inch, otherwise the pixels are so large it's unusable.

also to consider are PVA monitors, better colours than IPS, but much slower response. basically not suitable for anything other than photo editing. IPS is suitable for almost everything. i've gifted a second hand 24inch 1920x1200 PVA monitor for my parents for £150. blacks are darker than my £800 Dell IPS.

6bit E-IPS panel, hence cheap. Expect banding and other issues, so not perfect for serious editing

How are you getting on with that? I've seen some reports about very annoying antiglare coating

Isn't that the other way round - IPS have more accurate colours? I don't know a single Pro PVA monitor.

well, for £200, you can't really get any good panels. all sub £200 23inch IPS are also 6-bit E-IPS.

at first, the anti-glare is noticeable on whites and was slightly annoying. it's only noticeable on whites. it takes slight getting use to for website reading (white backgrounds and such) but for photo editing and gaming (my two main uses of my computer) the AG doesn't really affect the image quality or noticeable.

HOWEVER, if you are looking to photo edit professionally without any chance of glare, then i'd recommend something else, something without such aggressive AG coating. for processionals, one'd think the room's lighting is controlled, so this aggressive coating won't be needed.

don't get me wrong, the AG is fantastic, minimal glare even with a lamp right behind me. it's just not for everyone, and i can see how some people can get annoyed by it.

PVA is far superior in colour accurate-ness than IPS. especially in blacks because IPS suffers from backlight glow. really expensive professional monitors like Eizo SX3031W has S-PVA panel. only entry-level-professional monitors such as Apple, Dell and HP use IPS.

dell 2209wa is not an E-IPS i believe (i seem to remember its 8bit) and available for under 200 refurbed. sure its smaller than what the OP wants but a decent 27 for 200 is not likely.

no problems with whites or blacks either (hardware calibrated).

edit - some sites say e-ips others dont (inc dell), some say later models the e was removed. either way, no issues and loads of happy users.

I took a chance on a whim last week and got a 23" AOC IPS Monitor (here) and usually I stay away from the major brands but I'm glad I didn't as this monitor is excellent. When look at it against all the other monitors at the store it was sharp whereas the others looked blurred.

I think it's an E-IPS but compared to my Dell 22" it was worth it.

A couple weeks ago I bought a Yamasaki Catleap. It's a 27" 1440p IPS display, which has the same LG panel that's in an Apple cinema display. The catch is that you buy them off ebay from Korea. However, the monitor plus customs came to £280.

Obviously there's a lot of risk. If something goes wrong I'd imagine you're on your own. I just couldn't resist, given the price. I ordered the "pixel perfect" version, where they check that the screen has no dead pixels before sending it off. So far I'm very happy, and have had no issues. The display is amazing!

There's a thread here for the Catleap. The screen is quite popular among the gamers.
