Hi guys, getting more and more paid work and need my output to be more consistent. I currently use a laptop which is more than up to the job but the tilting screen is obviously an issue.

I have £300 to spend on a monitor, can anyone give me any recommendations? I'm obviously willing to spend less unless required.

Would I connect using my HDMI output?

Do screens come pre-calibrated or do I need to purchase calibration software too?

Many thanks.

Will take a look cheers Neil, always forget to search when on the phone app.

I just bought a 2412 for £170. It's a cracking monitor and I just need to get a Spyder or similar now. You can spend a lot more but I guess it depends on what you're used to, what you'll be using it for and "how professional" you need it to be. It was night and day between my laptop and the 2412.

You'll need to think about your own price point vs quality trade-off... you could spend thousands if you need to, but you could spend relatively little if you don't need to.

I have a U2412M as well, and it's good, but there are times I wish for a 27" screen with even more space.

And there lies that slippery slope... "it's only an extra [xxx]..." ;)

There is, but finance is VERY limited for this kind of thing, and the next stage up that slippery slope is REAL money. And besides, there's a limit to the size of monitor one can enjoy without getting a pain in the neck from having to turn your head to look at either end. ;)

Cheers everyone, had read about the 2412's previously and glad of some first hand feedback from a photographers point of view.

Will keep an eye on prices, I think 24" will be more than enough for what I need.

Good luck Dan. By the way, my 2412 only has DVI and DP inputs (as well as D-sub) so I had to get a HDMI-DVI cable as my laptop only has HDMI.

I do have an early revision though (eek!) so not sure if it's since changed?

Great cheers for the heads up, their saver price is out if stock but their normal price is still pretty cheap.

Hi all, well I bought the dell monitor suggested and am very pleased.

I now need to calibrate it and am just about to purchase Spyder4 express.

How do I go about doing this when I have a laptop which drives the new monitor. I understand I will use the physical spyder hardware on the monitor but how will the software adjusting the monitor effect the screen on my laptop? How will it know that it is calibrating a monitor rather than the laptop screen?

Any help would be great, cheers
