I'm currently using Dell 2007 WFP (using with Mac) and fairly pleased with it, but I might want something bigger soon.

The options are:
* Old Apple 30" non-glossy (used)
* Dell 2711 (I've heard of issues with rainbow coloured glow from antiglare) £500+
* Old NEC MultiSync LCD2470WVX (edit - it's TN so off the list) - they did make some IPS pro grade panels
* something else

I am slightly concerned with coating issues on 2711, but 2007 is totally fine with me. I am also concerned about wide gamut and if that is a problem with various apps, browser and LR.
So - is the old apple better for me?
Should I just go 24" for the next year or so and save the money for a better new mac?

I have a HP LP2475w and very nice it is too :)

Thanks, this may be also interesting.

Does anyone know a brick and mortar shop to see the Dell in action?

Have you considered the dell 3008 basically the same as the apple but with more connectivity and not so good looking.

I have just got a u2711 and its not half bad...

It does have issues as most screens seem to unless you pay big bucks.

Turn the brightness down to 22-28 this helps quite a bit.
the backlighting is not even across the full screen corner to corner there is a difference.
Colour tint/uniformity across the screen in not perfect again corner to corner, pink to green on my screen.
AG is not all that bad to my eyes.

The new HP would be worth a look but connections are cut down. The 24 inch models are not massively smaller in height just not as wide.

I got my U2711 for £515.99 new with full screen pixel defect warranty from http://www.pcbuyit.co.uk/

Thanks. This sounds rather worrying for the price. I'll look into HP and the older big (cheap) stuff.

Most of the cheaper IPS panels have some issues, the HP I believe uses the same pannel as the Dell, Apple, Hazo but has LED back lighting. The issues I highlighted are minimal but there none the less.

If you are looking for closer to 100% perfect you need to be looking at pro NEC and Eizo £1000+ you get what you pay for.

Dell U2410, Dell U2412M are good options but also suffer from colour tints.

I mainly use the mointor for CAD and a few photos, its much high res and more accurate than my old PVA Xerox 19" so I'm happy with it. I seems the best of the current bunch...

OK, I didn't realise Dell wasn't LED. This is a dealbraker for me if I am buying new | in this price region.

The older -2008 apple is not LED either?

So that leaves me in with HP, or in the bargain basement hunting zone (buy cheap and enjoy while it works - Dell 2007 was a big hit!)

The backlighting on the dell is old tec but quite even...

you might want to look at Hazro monitors too, they use the same IPS pannel as the Dell, apple, HP.

Thanks for the link.

I am not very keen on the CCFL backlight, as it less reliable, less even and shadows can look a bit too bright in a very dimly illuminated room. I really wanted to upgrade, not just go bigger.

edit: it is already more complicated than I wanted. Since I don't want to make a decision on some rather personal reviews, I must see them in action. Are they for sale in any real stores?
That or I am scavenging ebay yet again

i dont think you will find them in a store to look at in the flesh, unless you are off to london.

I have heard of a couple of guys buying 2 mointors trying them and returning 1 under the 7 day distant seller regs.

It is not very urgent... I can get there. Which store would you recommend?

Still thinking... I think I have to look more liberally at CCFL backlighting or I'm getting nowhere. There is HP zr2740w LED, but not perfect and not too affordable either.
The new eIPS stuff is definitely off the list; 6bit is totally unacceptable in my books.

How much is inverter repair if the worst happens, that is if I got an old rotten apple or dell u2410/hp lp2475?

new iMac line could be interesting, if they did away with the glare (after June / July refresh)
