Recently taken up photography, and i have found wildlife is the thing that interests me the most. I currently have a Sigma 120 - 400mm, and in all honesty i find it a good all round lens. In the very near future i will be looking to upgrade the sigma for a dedicated wildlife lens. I will be looking to spend between £1000 and £1700, can anyone advise. Currently have a Canon 60d.

Second hand canon 300 2.8 if you eed a fast lens and a 2x extender should be a good pair, although it might come to about 2k depending on condition of both items.
If you don't need a fast lens, the canon 400 5.6 is a great lens.
 
is there anything in the Sigma range that would be worth considering?
 
The sigma 50-500mm f4-6.3 OS would be a step up from your current lens. The sigma 120-300mm f2.8 has just been upgraded to include OS, but its outside of the top end of your budget at the moment, the older version, although good, does have some issues with build quality, back focusing, and drop off in autofocus performance when conditions become a bit challenging, but its still a good performer especially when you consider what you're getting for a very reasonable outlay, a 120-300mm f2.8 lens, neither Canon or Nikon can boast that in their lens range. From all accounts the sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS has ironed out the issues of the previous model, still not in the same division as the canon 300mm f2.8 , but very good for the $$
 
The sigma 50-500 OS is a strong lens, I had a few up (just 39) , so I've set LR off syncing the other 188 so you've a better idea what it can do in the hands of an average non-pro Joe.

The bulk of these will be unprocessed as I tend just to work on the better ones.

I have now shortlisted, sigma 50 - 500, Canon 400L f5.6, and Canon 300L F4 IS (already have 1.4 T/C)

I use a Sigma 500 f4.5 prime for bird photography. OK it's not the Canon 500mm f4 but for £1700 2nd hand suits me fine;)

Cheers Rhod, never realised that Sigma did long primes, but then again dont know much about photography really.

Give us the Sigma 120 - 400mm for a few weeks and I'll have a think about a suggestion!

The newer Sigma 50-500 OS is a tad sharper than your current lens, after that it is the Sigma 120-300 f2.8 OS with a 2X, but that is a bit more money. The Canon 400 f5.6 prime is super sharp, but no IS and you wouldn't gain in focal length.
 
Ouch, at that money it wants to be good :)
