I know this is equip related but the advice from you guys in here will help me better than the equipment thread.

I have around £800 to invest in a new body, opinions on the following would be grateful.

D7000 or D300(s) with grip, for those that know me, know what I shoot, for those that don't, low light over fps for me.

Thanks in advance.

Phil.

£8000 might get you some new pecs and a minor face lift but you probably better hiring a body double.

haha you're seeing toooooo many zero's mate, as for the pec lift, I like 'em saggin, it's a portable bean bag ;)

Sorry can't help you Phil - I only know the Canon side of things ..
But I do see quite a few of D300 bodies hanging around togs in games...but could say whether 300 or 7000 would be the better of the two..

im guessing they would be using a d300 for a second body or something? ive always been under the impression most pro sports togs used full frame!

I'd say it would depend on what is more important, frames per second or high ISO performance.

FPS and it would be the D300S with 7fps, D300S + grip at 8fps against 6fps for the D7000 with or without grip. Apparently the D7000 starts to slow down the frame rate after 22 frames at 6fps for Jpegs whereas the D300S is still going full speed up to about 100 Jpegs, which is quite a difference in performance.

The D7000 seems to have the better ISO performance, and with quite a big increase in pixels over the D300S that is impressive.

As for £800 to spend, I don't think you're going to get a body and grip of either model for anywhere near that price new, maybe 2nd hand.

Thanks, no real need for full frame, although a D3s would be nice :naughty:

Thanks for the input, FPS aint really all that important over ISO, I shoot in bursts but never run out of steam with the D5000, so either of these are better in that respect.

Not looking at new, seen some good ones S/h of both so looking at options.

Hi Phil, I had the D5000 and p/x it for D300s.

I shoot rugby and I must admit the AF is awesome and I get more keepers with my D300s than I did with my D5000.

Hi Phil

Take what Uncle Ken Rockwell says with a pinch of salt, the D7000 is atleast 1 stop behind the D3 in ISO performance and is only 1/2 better than the D300, ive used them all out in the field.

I bought a D300S as a back up body 3 weeks ago from MPB, while it was a great camera is was poor at ISO 1600 and theres no way i could use it with a D3S as my first body, the gap was way, way too big.

I have just bought a used D700 and 3rd party grip and this is more like it, its absolutly on a par with the D3 for ISO performance and great AF as well which doesnt falter under floodlights at ISO 2500-6400, well worth the extra investment.

Personally i wouldnt go near a D300 or D7000 again but of the 2 i would choose the D7000 for the extra stop of noise handling but crop sensors are alsways going to be way behing FF sensors in the ISO stakes

Scores for 'Sports (Lowlight ISO) on DxO are:

D7000 - 1167pts.
D300 - 679pts.
D300s - 787pts.

Those scores (not sure how accurate they are) make the decision a no brainer really.

thanks all, well the dark side in me took over. I got the D7000 and it should arrive tomorrow. I'll let you all know if im sleeping on the sofa tomorrow night ;)
