Hi all,

I want to ideally use a gold brolly for outdoor shoots to give a sun-like effect when it's a dull day.

I'm using the modifier on portable Lencarta lights.

Brollies have a habit of blowing inside out with a little wind and softboxes aren't all that portable.

Any suggestions?

Folding softbox?You could fit a gold gel inside it.
You'd still need to weigh it down of course, and especially with wind like todays - I was out shooting today, on moorland at the highest point in Yorkshire - great fun:)

Thanks Garry - I guess beauty dishes are more substantial, but not the same warm light - I suppose I could alter WB a little in PP though.

That would have been an issue, but I've picked up a really heavy duty stand now. The issue is the brolly blowing inside out!

I didn't think about a beauty dish:bonk: but it's the obvious answer if you don't mind the weight...

They come with a diffuser, which basically turns them into a circular softbox. You'd need to add a warming gel, you can't realistically warm the light in PP without warming the ambient light as well

Aaah, ok - How do you fit a gel to the dish?

You know some companies sell different colour deflectors.....

If you're going to do this a lot then spare deflector and a can of spray paint is less hassle.

Mind you a beauty dish in the wind can be a lot of fun.

For a cheap easy "sandbag" - get a water carrier from the pound shop. I thing they hold 20l. Take it empty, fill with water for 20 kilos of counterweight and then empty it out for a light trip home. It's portable studio lighting, not Speedlights!

Could you not do this in layers and erase through? Bit of a job I know, but may do it...

That is sort of what I meant, I was adding to what someone else suggested by tweaking the WB to a warmer tone for the subject, but keeping the BG a cooler shade as required.

Save two files from the one raw with differing temps, then merge... Seems a long winded way of doing it when there are gold modifyers out there I know.. Just a thought..

It isn't just a long winded way, it's a non-working way.
Monitors have 2 dimensions, light has 3

Um, you think I was serious....? :D

I've done split whibal and layer mask - often for churches which seem intent on mixing every kind of lighting known to man. Takes a while.... Gel on the disk is way quicker even for the first image.
