Modeling light for small flashguns

Blindingly obvious when you see it,

It's about 2 mins in

But not very representative of the actual flash modelling at all. The bare bulb just shines everywhere, the light is not directed into the brolly as it needs to be

The kind of DIY/bodge-it ethic beloved by hot-shoe strobists is all fine and good, but if you want to work with modelling lights - and it really makes life very much easier a lot of the time - then get a proper studio flash. They're pretty cheap.

When I first heard what they were showing in the segment I thought it would be some kind of torch based system or something that ran off batteries (to go along with the strobist ether) not simply a mains powered light.

As Hoppy said, if I am near to a power socket and want a modelling light then I use my studio strobes.

Using CLS you can get a pretty decent feel of modelling even with SB600s (which technically don't support 'modelling') by hitting the DoF button in D200/D300's. That's why I love the 600 as slaves - pretty much everything the 800/900 is when used as a slave, apart from a tiny bit of power..
