Model & Paint

Basically I have to shoot a models portfolio- head and Shoulders basic enough shoot

However: She has now expressed a desire to have a shot of herself being hit by paint ( thrown by her partner) She wants the shot to be of the exact moment the paint hits her bikini clad body :shrug:

So, my question is what lens, do I use off camera flash to freeze the moment or just shoot with a really fast shutter speed with a long lens to keep my equipment well away from the paint, I may only get one chance of nailing this - for obvious reasons :lol:


Lenses I own


18-55mm f3.5
10-20mm f3.5
24-70mm f2.8
50mm f1.8
105mm f2.8
150-500mm f5

Manfrotto 55pro tripod

sony flash with sync cable

For my money, I'd get the model full length in the frame (incase the full length is a winner shot) so you can crop in for the head and shoulders, put the camera on a tripod if you have one, ask her to stand on a spot on the ground (so she doesn't jump around and out of frame!), set a small aperture (say f11) and crank the ISO until you get that aperture, set a shutter of at least 1/500 sec - and finally pre-focus by setting the lens to manual and asking someone to stand on the spot beforehand. Good luck - sounds fun:)

For a full body shoot as Steve is suggesting I would go for the 24-70mm lens - its a fast lens.

Would love to see the photos after you have done the shoot :)
 
I'll give that a try - small aperture (f11 on) tripod - manual focus and hopefully get to 1/500th sec Then get thje paint involved

will post images if I get it right :lol:

Where are you planning on doing this les? Indoors? Outdoors? It seems everyone is concentrating on freezing the paint but what about the rest of the pic? Lighting? Background etc?

Also if as you say you only got one shot, practice on the wife before hand :)

In a warehouse 2nd floor - I have access too - It has white painted brick walls and large windows with the glass still intact and a boarded floor

Plenty of natural light to be used and the paint will be RED or YELLOW so the BG of whote walls will be fine Im thinking

Practise on the wife- yeah right I aint throwing paint on my Mrs- she lets me buy Lenses an stuff :lol::lol::lol:

This sounds interesting and fun i will keep am eye out for the results....
As for practising on the wife you might end up living in that warehouse on the 2nd floor :lol:

good luck with the shot les...it will all be down to the timing

have you thought about the paint and its viscosity, its probably something to consider im sure, why dosnt she have a go with flour or suchlike, easier to take a repeat shot if it dosnt come off:thinking:
