I'm in the process of mocking up a website design and would like some opinions on which typefaces people use or like.

I know next to nothing about typefaces so the incredible array of options is just far to confusing.

Thanks in advance

Edit

I have now mocked up some pages attached below (post 4) are some screen grabs, comments please.

Excellent thank you, I'll take a look through those tonight.

So this is what I'm proposing at the minute. Comments much appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks for taking the time to comment Sue, I appreciate it.

Not sure about the fading lower case design of the tabs, they look a little washed out.

Is the site to sell photos you have already taken or to look for photographic work? Your text needs to say what the site is about.

The cloud banner is lovely.

personally i don't like the use of bold text for first character of each page, nor the bold normal bold bold normal in the main heading......

but that's just my opinion...........

why NnG? --- I assume theres a north norfolk in there somewhere?

On the plus side, it's clean, and uncluttered.......... and i do like the cloudy top bits!

Thanks Alison and Lynton.

The font I used has applied the bold to the first character, I'll have another play with that.

The text is not yet done, but thank you I'll keep that in mind when I start typing the text up.

Personally, I'm not that keen on the style of the navigation bar. I don't think the gradient and the bold of each letter works well.

Bear in mind that any font you choose will need to be supported by the browser of he viewer so any out there font may not be any good. :)

Also I'm really not a fan of the nav bar, it looks so 90's and old fashioned. The actual site looks nice, just the nav bar letting it down.

Thanks folks I'll have a look at redesigning the nav bar and yes good point about the font needing to be supported by the viewer, hadn't even considered that.:bang::thumbs:

The main text is all Helvetica. I just wanted something different for the NnG Photography logo. Thanks for commenting.

Mark

OK I have had a little tweek, lost the nav bar and changed the typeface on the tabs to Helvetica to match the main text of the site.
I've kept the NnG typeface as I want something a bit different for the logo. Will have to explore how it works on browers etc.

I'm not sure that the tabs are a bit unbalanced against the rest of the page:shrug:

Thanks

If you make the 'nng photography' an image it won't matter what fonts the viewers browser will display.

Good point, well made.. will have a play with that idea. Thanks Mark:thumbs:

Not a fan of the clouds myself, I think plain blue or a very subtle graqdient would look cleaner. Also you don't need a link for the homepage - people will rarely if ever want to return to the homepage of a simple site. Less is more I reckon.

You're welcome, and it's Dave! :D

Lol thanks Dave... let down by my editing skills (not for the first time)

Thanks for the comments Lornholio. I can lose the homepage tab, possibly make the logo clickable to return to the homepage. I'm liking the clouds myself, but will have a look at your suggestion and see what I think.

Like the new navigation but I think the tabs should be closer together. You don't need to use the whole of the top for the nav, perhaps have them located to the left and a blank space in the middle?

I'd get rid of the cloud banner and make your logo text white. Would look really sleek.

Navigation on doesn't look sleek, agree about getting rid of home, and making logo clickable back to home page.

The whole thing look top heavy. The reason for this is the header (logo and navigation links) stretches the whole width but the content leaves gaping holes either side.

Dark blue BG is not for me. Grey, White or Black is best for photos IMHO.

Not sure of your size, but design is ideal at 900 wide x 800 High is a good standard size to work with.

Nav does not stand out, agree on the get rid of clouds, keep all of site same colour will really help it look slicker. With the text of the header, I would make it all caps and bold to make it stand out, also maybe look at going down a size or 2, and make them closer together.

This web design business is tricky ain't it. Thanks for all the feedback it's really appreciated. I'll mock up some different versions and change the size to 900 x 800.

Will google web2.0 to see what you mean andiphoto.

thanks again for all the help and advice

Best way of doing it is to copy someone elses design... :p

Or more precisely have a look round and take bit from a few websites that you like nd have a fiddle with them until you like what you see. It's much easier than starting from scratch and it's pretty much what all designers do. :)

*Just to clarify I don't mean copy code for code, and certainly don't just copy and paste the code from their site. :)

Keep at it buddy its looking better all the time...

Wish i had the skills to do one myself.." I use the photium pre made one myself lol"

Radical change, hopefully taking on board all comments.

Comments welcome, might need to add a news tab (want to avoid a blog, I have one of those and it's woefully out of date)

Thanks

I think some separation between the navigation/header area and the content area might look good. Maybe try some mock ups with a thin white line and/or subtly darker/lighter header area? Also having the logo smaller might look a bit more sleek.

Could be wrong but might be worth playing with those things.

Like this?

If the line was a little lower I think it would be just right. Maybe black or darker grey on the header, try them out.

Get other people's opinions too though, don't just take my word for it! Looking good though.

Personally I like the whole grey one.

Still the main issue for me is the logo seems disconnected from the rest of the page. Also your Nav is good, but maybe give it a try in bold and all capitals. Would make it stand out more from the normal text on the page.

An idea could be trying to move the logo to top left, and space navigation underneath to make a block where the logo and nav would sit.

Wherever you go from here though, the site looks so much better than when you started and you have done a real good job! Considering your first post was about typefaces to where you have come is a really nice looking website.

thanks all I will keep tweaking the look. I haven't yet decided on the one I like best and the suggestions being made are really helpful when assessing the design of the site.

Thanks for the link Bl0at3r and for the comments too:thumbs:

So I now feel that I making some progress... but am I:shrug:.

comments appreciated as always, thank you for your continued support:thumbs:

Looks real good. Being picky I would only have a cpl crits on this design.

Work with your logo and nav placement (both look great BTW) to make sure that the logo fits the nav, in so much as the n of nng lines up with the A of ABOUT and that the y of photography lines up with the T of About. I think you have room to do this easily if you move the navigation closer to the white line, which will allow you to make the logo larger and pull this off. On galleries make the title of each gallery stand out from your normal text (bold, all caps, or both?) Just means it stands out as a title. Also the way the text does not line up with the images at the left and right hand sides is something that you might want to look at.

This may be helpful, it is the grid design principles, which is essential in a crisp clean site. http://www.designbygrid.com/

Some good reading on there. Might help with what i am trying to get at.

Apart from that you have created a clean site which works well.

Looking good. I agree with making things line up.

Try:

White line moved up just slightly (equal space between Nav & line and between line & text.
A little more space at the very top.

I'm nitpicking here, definitely come along a lot since version 1.

Excellent thanks both, I''ll sort the text so that it lines up with the galleries and tweak the logo size as well.
