Even before I ended up in hospital with a heart attack and flu my mobility was not great, as always getting a taxi to town then a short walk but because of my COPD I'd end up shattered and would need to stop and sit down for a rest hard to when no bench is in sight. I know I start a rehab up in a few more weeks because of my heart, but I did talk to nurses about a aid that I might be able to get/buy to help me walk further and rest as and when needed and they thought it a good idea, so has anyone ever used or own a Rollator at all as once I am up and about I know my COPD will still hamper me. Any thoughts or advice would be very helpful.
 
The best advice I could give you is, if you can, go somewhere that sells them and try a few out.

There are just so many different variations and what may be suitable for one person may not be suitable for another.

Some things to take into account:

Max user weight
Foldable or fixed?
4 or 3 wheel?
Size and comfort
Ease of use

There are just so many variables, which is why I suggest you actually go and try some out if you can.

Just to add I do not use one myself, my comments are based off of helping my dear old Mum choose hers


EDIT: Just to add you should be eligible for VAT relief should you buy one for yourself.

Thank you Doug, that link that Marc gave is great as have been looking and seen a few I really like.
 
MiL has a 4 wheeler. The shop we got it from won't supply 3 wheelers because they're so unstable - look at the Reliant 3 wheeled cars! Good advice about trying before you buy, there are loads around and some are significantly better value than others.

Thanks Nod, I will check some out and try them it would be only a four wheeled one.

I have noticed that both people in my locality who have had 3 wheelers have changed to 4 wheelers.
 
me personally i would ask your GP to refer you to an OT/Physio, rather than trust a salesman, there is more too it than you think ,it will take longer but is the safer option, you can also phone your local council careline, one of the options will be for OT, i dont know how long that process would be though, im surmising may be longer than going via GP...good luck

Thank you, I do have a follow up home visit tomorrow so will also talk to them.
 
Are they not supplied free?
 
Zimmer frame type thingies are but rollators aren't.
 
I'm sure My Mum didn't pay for hers, perhaps it's down to location?
 
Possibly. We tried to get one from the OT for Mrs Nod's Mum but had to buy one.

It good that you'll soon be up and about. Take it easy though, don't push yourself too hard.

That may have been the issue with the MiL's - she needed it THEN and getting a physio/OT appointment wasn't quick enough.

Thanks Alan, it is going to take a long time till I start getting back out and about as even small slow exercisers hurt my chest. I have set June to be up and about I hope.
 
Your local Red Cross has lots of "mobility" aids and lots of experience in loaning the correct stuff at the correct time. We had to move my immobile father 200 miles to be near us and they loaned us a bunch of kit that was brilliant for helping him (and us) to do the journey safely and respectfully to preserve his dignity. Needless to say, we made a generous donation to their funds and have continued to do so.
