Just been having a chat with vodafone, basically my 1gb of data has been used in 8 days! My phone, a wiley fox swift says I have used 328mn of data between 11th august and 10th september, since I have "used" all the dat I have turned mobile data off. The advisor at vodafone said it might be worth getting checked instore by a technical support person. Never come across this possible issue before.

Has anyone had an issue with data leakage whilst on wifi, is it a phone fault or software issue?

Thanks in advance.

A lot of apps are constantly calling home if your data is on.
You should be able to see what has been using it.

What are you using data for?
Do you have any software that constantly 'reports' that you don't need on?

It could be a rogue app.
Go to "settings" - "mobile data" and see if there are any apps using a lot of background data.

As much as they should update through wifi if connected to wifi they could pillaging mobile data too if it is switched on at the same time.

If an app is the culprit you should be able to restrict the background data.

I cant imagine it being a phone fault and operating system is unlikely to be the cause either me thinks.

I've had this twice (with Vodaphone not that it matters)

Try uninstalling Facebook, if you have it. Then a day later re-install it to see if anything has changed.

Check you don't have wifi assist on if you have an iPhone as that uses mobile data if the wifi is not strong enough or locked up, we had this issue with our users at work going through mountains of data a while back

I had this when Facebook changed its settings to automatically play video on data. There was a setting where I could change it to only automatically play videos on wifi. You should able to check data usage to find the offending app.

Also the dates are 11th August to 10th September. I'm hoping that's a typo as its only 25th August today.
To be fair Android works on a defined month (my period is defined up to 29th Aug for example ) so it might be that the phone and Vodafone are working to 2 different timescales.

You can change the monthly definition from the data usage page, change cycle.

I had to do a factory reset and I hadn't changed the monthly dates, so it automatically chose a month. I saw this after the phonecall, I currently only have gmail come through to my phone, though I hardly ever get alerts, I used to have outlook on my galaxy s4 where I got loads of emails and I never went over the limit of data. Only thing that I have put on is messenger and whatsapp, but surely if they were using loads of mobile data it would have shown up on the phones data usage.
Also if it is data leakage would the extra data show up on the data usage screen?
I don't have the facebook app, I go via the shortcut in dolphin browsers home screen

Vodafone have had some serious billing problems lately so I'd ask them for more itemisation and some decent proof you've actually used that much.

I shall approach them again, I should be able to pop into a store on monday, will be interesting to see what they can show me. I remember when vodafone never cocked up, I am getting sick and tired of them again now!

I'm on Vodafone as well. The data usage isn't always that straightforward. I like it though that when roaming it highlights the data limit automatically. It seems to record it accurately for me. The 320MB tethering was what I did in a taverna as I had to upload a proposal I wrote on the plane.

On my online bills it specifies all data connections and it's usage. You may want to check whether there were any spikes in it? Perhaps update of applications, music download enabled via data or a game download. My wife didn't disable the in app settings for Apple music and got stung whilst downloading music. Lesson and we moved on.

Any mobile data used should show on the usage chart even background services.

Yep, this is what I don't understand, turning mobile data off and using wifi the count hasn't changed on my phone. If there there was an issue with data leakage surely my mobile data would increase? Hopefully the store can show me on there systems the data i have used when I go in.

if an app was using data the OS should report it yes.

only thing you can do is change the month period on the data usage page to match your vodafone billing cycle and set the mobile data limit accordingly and monitor it. then you can give screenshots to vodafone to query any usage bills.

thinking about it, try changing the month period on the phone now to match your bill. does it update the usage to show the correct period?

Popped into a store, pointless going in they said as they can only see the bill, but she agreed something wasn't right and put a note on my account, spoke to them over the phone today and the lady said it should not have happened and I have loads of data left! They are doing a fault find and it shouldn't occur again, I hope! Thanks for the replies all.

Worth reporting to OFCOM. O2 got fined by them because their billing system didn't work properly.
