Is it just me or are all the major mobile phone companies screwing us with their less than adequate deals on offer these days . Was looking at the iphone6 on contract ,I'm with T- mobile just now HTC one m7 unlimited everything for £29 . Can't get anything near that nowadays it seems ,or am I not looking in the right places ?

Nope it not just you, I was on same with T-Mobile, HTC one SV. iand fractionally cheaper, (well it was until the prices crept up and up ;) )
I had a good look round as my 2 years is up, and just settled on sim only deal, £15.99.
but with 2Gb data, seems no one offers unlimited everything now,
although I did find an obscure one (I forget the name) but decided to stick with EE, as it appears I was only using 1Gb anyway.

SIM only is the only way to get a value for money package in my opinion.

Then again do you honestly need unlimited everything? I'm on 36GB data and unlimited minutes and text. I stream a lot of hd in hotels, I download full OS ISO's but never seem to reach it.

On paper unlimited sounds great, but in reality does it matter?

Call ee, ask for pac number to go to o2, they will then send you to retention team to do a deal.. my sister has just got the iphone 6 128gb, umlimited mins, unlimited text, 4GB Data, no upfront cost and £120 credited to her account to make it £39 a month.. on there site the same tariff is £250 upfront and £44 a month..

I done the same with o2, told them i was leaving, to expensive, told them i do photography, they switched me to a business tariff, 12 month contract, 6 months free line rental, other 6 months £19 a month for that i get unlimited text & Mins, and 5GB net - then purchased the handset outright from apple, works out lot cheaper. Handset cost £699 (128gb) 18 X £19 (6 months free) = £1041 - same cost today on ee is £179 upfront 24 X £47 = £1307

3 do a all you cat eat for £27 a month sim only - but i think there is a cap on data that can be used for tethering..

Probably not, TBH I wasn't sure how much mobile data I used, but as you probably know they can check that in the store retrospectively.
The all you can eat deal from T-mobile, over 2 years ago, may have been some kind of sweetener to stop "you" switching to EE.
Even though they are the same company..
Dunno.

Are they the same company? I thought T-Mobile just utilised the EE network, as do Virgin.

I though EE was formed by a merger of Orange and T-Mobiles respective parent companies

Assuming you are happy with the phone, in my case I was,
I'd bought the phone and some from the previous 2 year contract.
the 15.99 deal was for 12 months or the same deal monthly was £18.99

From the web, as they can explain it better than me ;)

EE are finally closing the doors on Orange and T-mobile, four years after the two networks merged in 2010.
Last week, the Orange website, long unaffected by the Everything Everywhere merger, finally turned from tangerine to green, redirecting to the EE site.

Orange and T-mobile announced their merger in 2010, it took two years for the new brand - Everything Everywhere, or EE - to emerge and the three networks have managed to co-exist on the market ever since, albeit with EE being the prominent brand.

Now, however, phasing out the two older brands has stepped up a pace.

phones have become very expensive and contracts echo that, just look at how much the contract phone you are looking at is to buy SIM free and divide that by 24 for starters. ie a £500 phone is £21 a month before any airtime and texts.

Add on what people want which is pretty much unlimited calls and texts and a couple of gig data and you are up to £40 real quick

I have a used Galaxy Note 2 bought on here for £100 and SIM only from EE for £19 and I think that's pretty good.

However my missus did just recently score a Galaxy Mini 4 on full monty for EE for £25/month

And yet there is a myriad of choices of phones, so you would have hoped the prices would have reflected the competitive market.
But price setting etc ( they wouldn't really do that as its illegal ;) ) all adds up to another rip off, for those looking for the latest gadgets.
(although thats not me)

And there's the thing

If you're happy not to have the latest, most shiny phone, you can get much better deals. A few months ago, I got the same deal as the OP mentions but for an M8 because the M9 was imminent. Have done the same thing in the past with iPhones. Got the 3GS when the 4 came out, got the 4S when the 5 came out.

This might be of interest to some.....

This is certainly worth a look, register interest with these guys who seem to offer a great option for low users.
I've been with Giffgaff for the past few years, I purchase iPhones year on year, from a colleague who upgrades to the latest each year.
It's certainly worth requesting your average usage from your current provider, like has been said above, Unlimited sounds great, but is not necessary 95% of the time.
I pay £12 per month, for an allocation which more than provides for my needs, and I've no need to get the very latest phone, the improvements to handsets year on year is so minimal, that there is no real advantage to doing so IMO

agreed @fabs and @Cobra the wannabees pay the price and the later adopters get the bargains :-)
Strictly speaking the wannabees are the haves and the later adopters are the wannabees as they have not yet :p

I prefer to call that the "I don't give a f***" category" personally ;)

Related - anyone got any horror stories about 3s coverage/service? I'm currently with giffgaff but the O2 network seems to be poor just about anywhere I want to use it. I've been driving around with various devices and sims checking signal etc and 3 seem to come out best over most of my area (anywhere in North Scotland) for signal. I can get a sim only deal for £11.00 pm which would suit me and I'm getting closer to clicking the 'do the deal' button.

I've been with 3 since I returned from overseas. I never have any coverage issues. I could use my mobile at no extra cost in New York, and I will be able to do so when I go to Spain next week. A very happy 3 customer.

I had 3 last year when they had problems with phone sig and internet, was that bad I had the contact cancelled .

I use 3 as a mobile dongle for my lap top when working away, (all over the country but never quite so far North as you)

It can be a bit slow at times but I've not had any issues on the coverage stakes.

No 3 coverage in Kilmacolm where I am which is a shame as some epic deals with them for sim only

I did the deed today, 12 months contract at £11 for 2gb 200mins and endless texts. My Current GG deal is 1gb 600mins + texts at £10 but I'm finding I get poor signal in many places when the payg 3 sim has good signal, if it works well then fine, if not it won't break the bank.

used all the networks at some time and three seems best for coverage - o2 and voda seem hopeless on coverage constantly going to near useless 2g anywhere rural and ee has an annoying "bundle" system but fair coverage

When my contract with O2 runs out in August, I'll be getting a talk talk sim, £12/month unlimited everything but it is only 3G not 4G, the one I'm on now is only 1gb of data but after cash back, it was only £10/month, my iPhone 5 will have lasted 3 years (with 1 replacement within 12 months so I could get better battery for a bit longer but it was free with Apple) and when the iPhone 6 is cheaper in September, I will replace it...maybe

but it is only 3G not 4G,
As of a couple of days ago I had been on 3G for a couple of years, and found it adequate for my needs,
although I must admit, after a couple of days of (light) use that 4G does seem to be faster.
