Mobile phone change/ keeping old number

Probably everyone except me knows the answer to this.

Currently have a pay as you go phone.
Tesco mobile network.

I intend to get a new pay as you go phone and to remain on Tesco mobile network.

If I want to retain my existing phone number can I simply put my existing SIM card in my new phone.

Yes, as long as the phone has not been locked to a specific operator then your sim card should work without issue.

The sales person should be able to tell you if it has been locked.

i think carphone warehouse phones are all sim-free... so they work with any network. BUT, they will still sell you a new p-a-y-g sim card with a new number and £10 worth of credit.

Just bought a new phone at Tesco who assures me I just need to pop the old SIM card into it and I will be up and running.

I have only ever had contract phones but when I've got a new contract my old network has given me a PAC code to pass on to the new network which will transfer your phone number over with you. If you end up with a new PAYG sim then you may still be able to keep your old number.

i dont think they are, some are locked,

also if you already have (for example) a pay as you go orange number and buy a new phone from the Pay and go range (orange) then you dont need to buy the credit
