I've recently got a HTC Desire mobile phone and I want to get a bluetooth headset for it so I can safely use the phone in the car. I've had a look on eBay and it looks like a lot of the models available are mobile phone specific. I was under the impression that as long as your phone has bluetooth then you can connect to another device that has bluetooth to any bluetooth headset could be used with any phone. Is this correct or do I need to get a specific handsfree kit?

I was looking at THIS which is described as a universal fit. Any recommendations from anyone?

Any BT earpiece should work with your phone but some will work better than others. I have gone through 5 or 6 in the past couple of years and have come to the conclusion that more is better, i.e. the cheaper ones tend to be waste of money.

My personal preference is for behind the ear ones since I hate things sticking in my ear and I'm always having to poke my head into bits of equipment, the favourite being a Sony Ericsson HBH-GV435. Had a Senheiser VMX100 too which was great on my own phone, the battery would run out in a matter of hours on my old work phone but that was the phones fault, it worked fine on the new one till it died.

The SE has become like a Borg implant, it's never off my ear when working and it's comfortable enough that I forget it's there which is what you want from an earpiece.

/edit the battery on it lasts for days.

I've had expensive & cheap ones & the functions / sound quality have always been much the same.

The difficult bit is finding one that fits, I found the cheaper Jabra units fitted my ears the best :)

that's handy I was just about to start a thread on bluetooth headsets :)

I have a work phone and a personal one, can anyone recommend a headset which will pair with both at the same time, ie whichever phone rings the headset will connect automatically, i'm using it in a noisy environment so good noise suppression and echo cancelling would also be required.

Don't think you'll get one that pairs with two phones at once, at least I've not seen one.

As for noise cancelling that's very hit and miss, outside in windy conditions I've not found an earpiece that can cope but in an environment where the noise is fairly constant you might have better luck.

My Samsung WEP 500 has noise canceling & claims to pair with multiple phones (never tried it). I bought mine cheap from Play.com

but it doesn't fit my ears :(

I use a Jawbone headset, the noise cancelling is amazing. They are a bit pricy though but I managed to find one on Amazon for half the retail price.

Looks like you can, the Plantronics voyager pro does according to amazon :)

I've ordered a Samsung WEP-210 from eBay for £10.99 which seems to be a fairly simple headset but I'm not going to use it too often and I'll only ever be using it while in the car so I don't need all the noise cancelling stuff. I on'y actually need one because the speaker phone on the HTC Desire is so quiet and tinny that I can't have a conversation on it. I'm hoping the headset will be a lot clearer.
