I've been trying to sort out a mobile power solution for my D-lites4IT for a while now without much joy. Although I like the VML i cant justify paying more than twice the price that the unit sells for in the US here!
Requirements are that the inverter needs to be a pure sine wave unit that allows switching of 110v-220v, the VML is 120w so anything over that i expect will suffice. Battery is 8800mah lithium so anything over 12ah will do i guess in SLA.
So I set out to built my own small solution, my findings to date...
1. Maplin 300w pure sinewave inverter... http://www.maplin.co.uk/pure-sine-wave-300w-dc-12v-to-ac-230v-power-invertor-228623 i tried this but it wouldn't even power them up!
2. Samlex 600w pure sinwave inverter PST-60S-12E... http://www.furneauxriddall.com/acatalog/Sine_Wave_Inverters.html These units are hard to find now as samlex have changed them, although this unit may work with other strobes it doesn't power up the D-lite4IT, i tried with a 19ah battary and no joy.
3. APC 700 UPS, this is a ups power supply, it has a pure sine wave 470w inverter with a 15ah battery, this unit will power 2 Dlite 4 IT at full power for over a hundred bangs and medium power for a couple hundred bangs, recycle times are near mains speeds. The only downsides are the huge weight at over 14kg and its very awkward to carry unless its in a bag, it also drops charge like a rock when not plugged into the mains. They're also hard to find as they're now discontinued.
To date for me the apc 700 is the only one that does the trick, aside from its weight and awkwardness
I'm still trying to put together a smaller solution that i can hang from the stand or similar. any pointers on small inverters would be nice, i have a small R&D budget that I've been using to find a solution!
Hope my first post here is worthwhile
