Mac finder is poo
Searching a specific location is a nightmare unless you are already browsing that folder, i cant seem to search for files labelled a colour without typing a text string to search and then removing the string.

And when browsing files in column view, i am forever resizing the columns to get a decent view of the filenames.

Hi Phil,

say if i want to search files labeled red in my music folder, i first have to browse to my music folder in finder, i can't select the folder to search from the spotlight window.

Also if you search for a text string using spotlight, then "show all results in finder", you have to edit the text string to get spotlight to show results with filename match only.

I get stupidly annoyed with things like this...

Thought it might help. I'm a bit of a newbie to mac myself so it's a learning curve for me too. I agree with the having to resize all the time. There are some things they do need to sort out.
 
Not sure what you are after but THIS ARTICLE might be useful to you.
You can probably set up what you want to do using Automator, but never having used it, I don't know how.

Oh and if you use Default Folder X you'll spend a lot less time in the Finder.

Oh and if you don't have either Alfred or Quicksilver (both free) then your Mac is broken ;) Set up Alfred right and [hot key] fi [music file] will instantly find a music file for you. Change the "fi" to "op" and it will play it instead.
 
Hi Jonathan, i currently use Launchbar, which is similar to alfred / quicksilver. I used to use Quicksilver, but it was a little buggy and not being developed, but i understand it is now again under active development.

Going to take look for default folder x.
