Yes
What is the difference between the two 50mm's and which is better in terms of IQ, Build etc.

I think the MKI is metalic where as the MKII is more plastic based and feels lighter and cheper I believe there is little difference in the quality of the actual glass though, I have a MKII and I'm more than happy with it the best walk about lens I have used
N.

The mk I has the metal base plate, and it a bit more robust I think, weighing a little bit more. And as far as i'm aware there is no difference in IQ (could be wrong though)
The mk II is more plasticy, and weighs less, however, is a fraction of the cost.

I know which id prefer (to keep the notes in my wallet)

if IQ is only debatable then i would rather save the few quid. Noticed a couple of Mk1 go for £80 ish and just thought is it worth the extra.

Whered you see this? Iv usually seen these go for more than 100quid..

But yeah id save your cash and get the mk II, thats what il be doing after I get the car taxed

Oh yeah, I thought they went for more than that!
Still, its an extra 20quid over the mk2 for not much more.

There is a mk 2 for 60quid in the for sale at the moment if you are looking to buy just now by the way ;)

Yeah i noticed that and had a quick look at my bank. I have to wait till pay day,

Currently i have a m42 50mm but wouldn't mind one that can auto focus instead of full manual.

Yeah the Af a bit plus point.
Good luck in your search

I've just bought the Mk1 in the Classifieds section (it arrived today), and sold my MkII (though the buyer has yet to pay).

Basically the Mk1 has a metal mount, distance scale, better focussing ring (it turns much further from one end to the other), is slightly heavier, much better built, but the optics are identical.

It feels a lot more solid, the focussing is slightly noisier due to the old AFD motor - but it seems more precise and hunts for focus less in low light.

I'm very impressed with it, mine is mint, and 23 years old, but optically and cosmetically 100% perfect! I'd recommend it if you can find one. They are rare on the forums, more common on eBay, but they seem to go for silly prices on there.

I think the difference for me is that with the Mk II, I didn't expect it to last - but the Mk 1 seems far more like it is built to last.

Seems like it could be worth the extra cash then.
You mind if I ask how much you got yours for?
Might save up a it extra now and try get one of these.

It was the one in the classifieds - £85 + P&P.

Cool, Dave if yours becomes avail through none payment, near my pay day next week then i will take it.

Would love the mk1 but did a search on ebay and noticed they were pritty rare and can't be bothered with the bid war lol.

The mk1 sounds like my m42 Lens, weighs a ton and built very solid.

I bought a Mk 1 in pristine condition from a car boot £5.00 i did'nt bother haggling
Regards
Richard

Haha, result you got there!
If only we were all so lucky!

that sort of deal doesnt happen very often at car boots. well done to you

If you do not need AF look for the Super Takumar 50mm f1.4

Along with the M42 to EOS converter it costs less than the Canon MK1, it is a stop faster and, in my opinion, sharper than the Canon. (I used to have both the MK1 and MK2 Canons as well as the Canon 50mm f1.4 before I got the Takumar)

Just took delivery of my MK2 today, and have to say, its an amazing bit of kit.
Coupled with my 400d, it feels like a new camera again.

yes, it's plasticy (if thats a word), but it feels positive on the mount and i guess, with most slr gear, just needs looking after a bit.

i paid £72.00 delivered (including paypal fee) and it arrived in 2 days.

cant wait to get out in the light and give it a hammering !!!

Dazza (chuffed to bits)
