Hi

Recently got a lencarta UP 300 which I use with a 4ft octa/beauty dish. Quite keen to add a strip light and will eventually probably get a smartflash for this. Bit tight on funds at the mo (thank you 70-200 vr2) so was wondering if my sb900 might suffice until funds allow. Has anybody used this combo?

Technically it'll work no problem - just sync it up and away you go. Speedlites work fine in positions where you don't need much power so they can be turned down to recycle fast.

Using one for a striplight might be more challenging.

This was my main concern! Set the sb900 on its widest setting and see how it goes? Or just wait until I get a smartflash?

You want to use the SB900 as a striplight? Wait.

As said the speedlite will work as a low power fill, but for a strip not going to be upto it as such, would wait and ge a head instead,

Use a hotshoe flashgun just for very subtle fill, or for effect lighting, or for when there isn't space for anything else.

It won't fill a strip softbox evenly.

Thanks Garry

Guess I'll be saving some more pennies for a smartflash and a strip box then!!

I'm surprised, i thought an SB900 on full power would probably fill a 130cm stripbox .

It's not a question of power, it's getting the strip evenly illuminated. Very hard with a hot-shoe gun, as all the light goes forward.

Could be done, maybe/kind of, with some DIY mods. But really not worth the hassle.
