Hello there. I'm looking for advice on flash compatibility between Nikon flashes and 3rd party, cheaper versions. I'm hoping to set up a main flash (sb700 on D7000) with two additional fill/background flashes. I was looking at the cheaper nissin/metz units but I'm not sure what to go with. I can't really afford two additional Nikon units :o(
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Anything will work OK in manual. Just get enough matching trigger receivers. Yongnuo YN560 seem to be popular budget option. Or, you could go old school, and get used SB24/26/28 which can be had for around £50-80 a pop.

Ok, ill take a look at those. thanks for info.

Yongnuo YN560 around fifty notes off eBay, can be used as an optical slave to your Nikon flash. You might get away without the triggers depending on distance/setup. Of course, the more such units you have, the more you have to fiddle with the settings.
