OK! Wife's off to bed so time for this post.

We have two days in London (Wed & Thur) this week. Wednesday is all work (750 wines to taste) but clear after that to enjoy some time without kids and see the sights. Was going to take camera and superlightweight carbon fibre tripod but what lens. Have choice of 16-35mm 2.8L, 24-70f2.8L or nifty fifty. Long lenses are too heavy and will have to stay at home.

24-70 would be obvious choice but I want arguments for the other two lenses. Including venues if you wish but must be wife friendly. Your help is needed - and if any of you ladies say leave the camera at home I will ... OK I don't know what I will do but being male I will probably sulk a bit....

:D

750 wines  what do you do again?

Hey ... that nifty has gotta be so compact and light the wife'll never notice it's in her handbag ... :naughty:

Don't leave home without it HuN ... :D

:p

Even if you don't swallow, you must get a bit tipsy after 750 mouthfuls of the old vino???

my misses always swallows ;)

sorry :coat:

leave the camera at home. you won't need it if you don't leave the hotel room. :D

Edit: On a more serious note, why can't you bring both the 16-35mm 2.8L and 24-70f2.8L? I would go to the London Eye for some shots. Maybe even go up in it, not sure what the pod glass will do to the quality of any shots taken from inside though.

There's always Big Ben and Westminster from across the Thames in the evening. ;)

You might get frustrated with the nifty fifty as you keep having to walk back and forth to get the framing right. (Yeah, I'm lazy).

24-70

Good morning!

My! the night owls have been busy :D thanks guys!

I am attending the Bibendum annual wine tasting which, this year, features 750 wines. A large number I have already tried or tasted (albeit it may be from different vinatges) so will be focusing on 50 wines I think I might want to stock and another 50 of interest. I doubt I will get further than that as my pallette will be shot!

If I do it will be to try the fine wines where there may be "vertical" tastings (ie same wine different vintages) of wines that would be too expensive to open at one sitting.

I am afraid I will be spitting and drinking water, and crackers and all sorts of other things to try to reset the pallette.

Anyway on to the serious business of photography, I see you are coming out in favour of the 24-70. No arguments for leaving it at home?

TBH i'd go for the wider lens as everything in london is crammed in.
If you need to be closer to something you can use your feet :D

If you want to shot mostly architectural/cityscapes I might be tempted to go for the 16-35 but if you want to capture some people/street scenes too then the 24-70 might be more useful. If it can only be one lens on a FF camera I think I’d lean towards the 24-70.

Places of interest ... along the South Bank can be a nice walk, you get nice view along the Thames, some bridges, and there should be enough to keep the missus distracted whilst you shoot :)

I'd go for the 16-35. Along the South Bank is your best bet and there is not really enough room to warrant anything longer (think you'd mostly end up at the 24 end of the 24-70). Go from London eye East, cross at Tower Bridge, head West and down to Houses of P for dusk (eye sore hoardings outside at mo tho :()

OK I am ready to go, eating my brekkie whilst other half gets ready. Flight at 7am. She is cool with camera so 24-70 AND 16-35 are both coming. Will see what comes out of trip. See ya all in a couple of days!

Hmmm should be back soon, wonder how he got on, any good wines, any good pics.

Sue the trip was good, the wines were better and the weather was fairly good but colder than here in the arctic circle  :suspect:

I lost my wallet second day but luckily had cash in other pocket and cancelled cards immediately. Photos from trip are here: http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?p=190912
