Missed the nothern lights!

Argh, just venting my frustration! I came back from Iceland on the 9th of September and the night before I left the girlfriend and I had a late night drive to a town called Selfoss, at about 2pm the sky started lighting up with a brilliant green aurora. Now I've always wanted to see this my whole life and I was literally speechless, it's truly a beautiful sight, but wait, I left my bleeding camera at the house with me thinking "Nahhh I won't need it it's pitch black for gods sake!":bang:

I wasn't too affected by missing the shot as I thought I'd be able to capture it when I go out for new years, but reading online some people spend a very long time trying to capture them and I missed out on a perfect opportunity!:(
 
Noooo! Gutted for you.

We went to Iceland a few years back when I only had a point and shoot. I really want to revisit again.

I've done that a few times. Sorry to rub it in but I haven't missed anything as impressive as the northern lights when I've left my camera behind... :)

I've only ever seen northern lights from an aeroplane.
 
I was going to start a thread asking people what there best "missed" shots were. Its a shame that!
 
Yep it's really a shame, it'll probably sound cliched but I really can't describe what an jaw dropping sight it was, with it reflecting in the bending river we were next to!:(
 
saw it for the first time back in august 2006, was in finland for the rally and noticed faint green clouds in the sky, grabbed the camera and ran down to the lake - didn't have a tripod with me so perched camera oin it's side on a picnic table and proper the lens up with my phone

I reckon we've all been there and done that... :thinking: ... although not always somewhere as spectacular as Northern Light territory... :shrug: ... gutted for you... ;)

But that's an amazing photo:D I know I won't be sleeping atall this new years waiting for the lights!

You won't be disappointed! It's a quirky place, most of the people are a bit eccentric!:D The scenery and natural light there is amazing, the best thing to do is hire a car and just explore as going on day trips can be very expensive!
 
Gutted! I intend to go in 2012 when its at its most potent to grab some shots, cant wait!
 
its also something I want to witness, although, I'd rather watch them than photograph them the first time.

I'd hate to miss the experience by tinkering with my camera :)
 
Going to Icleand next year in February I'm taking my Mrs for her 40th Birthday.

Hope we spot the aurora borealis :-) I won't forget my camera!
 
We went to Ruka, north of Finland earlier this year. We were on the border with the Arctic circle and we ventured further north, through the woods. A huge group of us on skidoos. What a blast! :D

Travelled about 20km hoping to catch a good view but it was waaay too cloudy. :(
 
Gutted for you that you didn't get some pics but at least you saw it. It sounds sooo amazing. I've been to Norway many many times but not in the winter. Will have to go up and try and see "the lights"

That's true, we just stood watching them for a while untill my arse started freezing off!:D

Really good time to go! It will most likely snow at least once whilst you're there, especially if you travel outside of Reykjavik, which is a must! The best thing to do is hire a car, a 4x4 preferably and just go exploring, it's fantastic!

I went to the exact same place in feb this year saw the lights 2 days in a row.
