Hi Guys,

I was wondering if you could help me out with a small problem.

I've just bought what I thought was a Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 EX DG from Ebay. Turn out the lens the seller sent me was the slightly older Non DG version.

Is the old lens just as good as the new one? Therefore, should I keep this lens (for use with my D50) or should I return it to the seller?

Many Thanks
Stephen

DG won't make any difference, its just a marketing exercise Sigma did in 2005 to charge 20% more for the same thing :)

Neither are good lenses though,,, the 28-70 is the runt of the 28-70, 24-70, 24-60 litter.

was it mis-advertised?

Yup,

The seller advertised as the DG model and then listed all the specs for the DG. The DG has a 67mm filter thread and the non-DG has a 77mm thread.

Good job I haven't bought any filters yet!

Yup, I knew this when I bought it but was on a budget. Glad to hear the DG means nothing :)

The seller proberbly copied and pasted from a similar add. I would send it back or ask for some sort of part refund if you want to keep it.

What Andy said. I have had both DG and non DG Sigma lenses and cant really tell the difference. Of course, any front element coating is virtually redundant as soon as you put a filter on it!

Is the coating not on the rear element on "Digital" lenses, to stop reflections bouncing around inside the camera?

I think I'll take the lens out for a test and see if I'm happy with the photos it takes since it sounds like both the DG and non-DG lens are practically the same.

Then if I'm not happy with it, I'll send it back.

Not been on the forum in a long time and you've all been a great help
Many Thanks
Stephen

Just a word of warning.. if you plan to use this lens on a D200 then you''ll find it'll under-expose by 2/3rd of a stop. Should be fine on a D50...

Yes, but i've had a few non dg lenses and had no problems with odd reflections.
I tend to agree with the marketing theory because they didn't half bump the price up at the same time

DG is actually a coating put on the lens elements and is supposed to stop the ghosting effect. I have a few sigma lenses dg and non DG with the ex lenses i've never noticed a problem but recently a friend was interested in a 170-500mm lens we tested 2 one a dg 1 not in harsh & conrast lighting conditions the dg images where better but this is a non ex lens. In normak lighting conditions there was no difference between the two i have the 24-70mm 2.8 dg myself are you sure Yours is not the dg version the dg is only marked on ring around front element not on body on my lens another thing is Dg versions did not change from the older models other than the coating so if design has changed you would effectively have bided against people who would have payed more for the newer lens so in effect you paid more. Sigma ex lenses are good so its down to you to decide if you got a good deal or not
im afraid i hope this helps

Thanks for the info.

This is defiantly the non-DG version as the the filter size was reduced from 77mm to 67mm.

However, I've now decided to send this lens back because the lens randomly stops talking to my D50 after a dozen or so photos.

I feel like I've been conned. Gonna buy through TP next time.
