Due to lack of time and could do with the extra £s for the moment so i've bought the the fuji hs50 which will cover all my needs for the winter months, selling my dslr gear and next year will get a new set up when i'll have the time to use it more.
Been looking at the gh3,d7100,70d etc and although have plenty of time to research stuff it does seem mirrorless does seem the way forward rather than dslr or is it? just wondering on peoples thoughts. Found this rather interesting

Can you live with an EVF or do you insist on OVF?

Do you intend to shoot fast action? Some say mirrorless isn't up to shooting action while some say it is.

Do you want compact and light kit or do you have someone with a wheelbarrow to carry your kit?

These and other questions need to be thought about and answered... :D
 
DSLR at the moment is far superior. I have tried both and for me the Canon 550 beats the mirror less I have tried.

It isn't!

I've owned and tried both and a CSC doesn't hold a candle to my 5DMKIII... None of the mirrorless cameras that I've seen can consistently and accurately track a small aircraft moving laterally at 400mph! :) If you feel like attempting to prove me wrong, I invite you to bring your little camera down to Wales and I'll take you out to (hopefully) photograph some jets.

That's a bit harsh! Most people can manage to carry a DSLR around with them without having to resort to a wheelbarrow. Having said that, most of the CSC's would fit nicely in a handbag (which will make it a little easier for you to come with me to see some jets 'cos you won't have so much to carry up the hill)! :D
 
My set up is simple - if I can carry everything around, I take 60D with grip, 24-70L, 100-400L and monopod and my Metz Handle flash.

If I want simple and easy to carry, I strip it down, stick the 17-85mm lens on, and use it like a point and shoot.... I tried a mirrorless - it just wasn't the same.

Other people manage it, and although you may look lovely with your handbag and high heels I'll pass thanks.

My lowly G1 when used at low to middle ISO settings produces images that are easily lost amongst 5D (which may possibly be at least the equal of your 550D for image quality) images and no one I've asked can pick them out at anything better than chance.

The very latest CSC will doubtless be better than my G1 and honestly, I often can't tell images apart unless I remember what kit I was using or look at the exif or file name.
 
Mirrorless are getting there very quickly. Nowadays there is not IQ sacrifice with mirrorless choice. They also often are smaller and lighter, which for most people is advantage (but not for everyone). The only thing they are still lagging behind are fast action scenes. Firstly because the lack in the tracking focus abilities and second because EVF refresh rate is still not enough for catching fast movements. But they give up on this respect only to most advanced and expensive DSLRs. In the middle and lower tier, there is not a big difference and it is just a matter of personal taste IMHO.

Any proof to back that up Alan? I can't ever recall seeing anyone perched on the side of a hill with a CSC who's been up there to photograph aircraft. I'm sure you could manage to get a decent shot of a Hercules but not a jet very easily.

I would imagine the keep-rate from a CSC as opposed to a DSLR would be much lower although I'd still be happy for you to come down and show me how to do it! :)

It's all very well being evangelical about a system but you need to acknowledge the shortcomings as well. As much as the CSC system has improved recently it's still not quite there yet. Apart from the size and weight savings, I see no benefits from the smaller system.
