When giving my sensor a quick clean the other night, I noticed that the mirror itself wasn't the cleanest puppy in the litter. Any advice on cleaning it?

Didn't want to touch it until i'd found out whether it could actually be cleaned etc, knowing my luck i'd kill it.

TIA.

Use a blower but don't touch it as yes, you could ruin it

I'm not sure a blower would sort it fella, it looks like smudges, as if it's been wiped before.

The photos haven't changed, it just that now I know it's their, it'll bug me.

Gunna have the camera serviced before it goes up for sale anyway, i'll mention it to them if theres nothing I can do myself.

I have cleaned mirrors on both of mine with pecpads, but you have to be oh so VERY gentle [moreso than the sensor itself] as the silver is on the surface, not underneath like a normal mirror, so I am sure as hell not gonna say go right ahead, thats your choice. If you plan a service soon anyway, probably best to let them do it.

Sensors are tough as old boots and will handle a good old scrubbing, mirrors will not though.

You could try using some lint free cloth or lens tissue, but don't rub too hard 'cos the mirror finish is on the surface (as mentioned above) Plus you could change the mechanical postion of the mirror wrt to the viewfinder which will knock your AF out of kilter. Do not touch with bare hands either, a fingerprint will stay there for ever.

:bonk: for god sake DONT let Janice hear you say that! :whistling:

btw, it was a fingerprint I got rid of on one of mine using pads, so it can be done, but I suspect an unnoticed one once dried will take some serious shifting thats probably best not tried.

I didn't think he was talking about scrubbing the sensor with sandpaper like Janice did :D

OI.....I wll have you know I used sensor wipes... the correct ones for my make and model of camera!!!

Its just that the dots wouldnt quite disappear each time and being a Virgo... I couldnt stop till its perfect!

Bit of advice. if you cant see any spots in your pics.. dont clean it.

And dont do this........... check on your pc by doing an auto-levels on the picture, as they say in some tutorials. thas what i did wrong, seeing all sorts of crud each tiime.

If id have just checked it by looking at the pic straight from cam Id have stopped!!!

the sensor on the d200 isn't tough either...

I know for a fact that the 5D sensor is a very delicate item - I managed to wreck one whilst wet cleaning it, and it cost me £200 to get it replaced . . .:(

Cheers people.

My photos have no marks on them, and the auto-focusing isn't any different, so I think i'll quit whilst i'm ahead and leave it.
