Yes
can this be achieved with a 2 head set up maybe with a background reflector scoop, or are 3 heads required to do this properly?

What would be a typical "basic" set up, are there any web sites with diagrams or any recommended books to get me started?

WHat kind of shot are you looking for? In my gallery are some shots which are perfectly acceptable WB headshots that I took using the onboard flash and one flashgun off camera? Can't do ful length shots with that, would need at least one more gun and also some kind of train for the floor.

yes thanks, they are fine. I am looking to go to studio flash and its cheaper to get a 3 head outfit at the outset than get a 2 head then add another. I guess I could get the 2 head and use it as you have, most shots will be head and shoulders......

you can get away with one and reflectors :)
or mix with ambient if you have a battery pack.

Have a google for Zack Arias. I know some of his stuff can be a little unconventional and he makes use of wrap from the background which is not really recommended much but for setting up a basic white background his stuff is very good. I think some of it might by on youtube.
