Hi guys, :help:

Can anyone recommend a mini tripod. i.e. 6inches tall. I see a lot of them in jessops etc but I doubt they will hold a DSLR such as my D70 and a heavy lens like a sigma 10-20. I want it for low shots of cars and other things.

Any recommendations greatly received. Thanks:)

My bro and I recently bought the gorillapod SLR zoom for my Dad [amongst other things - we ain't THAT stingy...] as the olds are going off on safari [in fact, are PRESENTLY off on safari! - Bar stewards... :annoyed:]

Anyway - point of the story is - I was having a play with it the other day - looks OK - I'm not entirely convinced it's very stable for use as actually a tripod, but I think it's pretty nifty if you really do want to wrap it around things!

Have you considered just a beanbag? They're surprisingly versatile - if you want an up angle for your camera, just through a block under the front of the bean bag! [Simple works well for me... no comments please!]

I also had a mini tripod that I nicked off my mum ['fore she wanted it back :(] and whilst that was fine for a light/short lens on my 350D body, it still wasn't exactly ideal - unless you can find a proper SLR mini-tripod, you might be disappointed with the normal mini-tripods, as they are not just designed for compacts, they're built for them!!

Joby's promo pics of the Gorillapod hanging off a tree or lampost with a dslr on it should have a warning label

Don't try this at home

I wouldn't trust much more than a p+s or a flash on even the slr version I have. Junk.

You could also try the Egorest and use it in the car aswell.

If you're getting a Gorillapod, get the SLR Zoom version, which is pretty sturdy. I wouldn't trust the SLR version. My SLR Zoom easily took my 486RC head, 400D & Tamron 18-200mm last time I used it.
