Hey, I am doing a mini project/competition at my work and this month is symmetry, I am very new to photography so took this on as a challenge, to push myself out of the comfort zone. Does anyone have any good ideas about symmetry?
 
I always find looking at the definition and synonyms of the word helpful in trying to link it with other ideas that may not have been thought about...

I don't think you will get too many responses giving you direct ideas though - although I would be happy to be proven wrong.

It's late and I'm just about to get off to bed but symmetry in photography is really appealing to me. Stairs, buildings, roads, are 3 quick examples of something that can easily be photographed that are symmetrical. My advice would be to keep it simple, as symmetry works best when it's simple - I.e not a complicated or 'busy' shot.
 
I would try to narrow it down a bit :) What kind of photography are you interested in? Will you be focusing on architecture - probably a good one for symmetry, or something more challenging? Also, it doesn't have to mean that absolutely everything in the frame is symmetrical. Play around with it!
 
Many road signs are symmetrical as are many buildings. Many circular things have several lines of symmetry, so that's an idea...
 
:thinking: I'd be really tempted to do something a bit more creative than just shooting a fairly obvious symmetrical object . . . perhaps make use of reflections either in water or by using a mirror in some way. There's a whole world of possibilities there whether you're into portraits, still life, architecture or anything else at all.

I think the key is to keep it simple and uncluttered and to give plenty of thought to your composition.
Would splitting the frame 50/50 to emphasise the symmetry work better than going for thirds?
Or would framing something perfectly symmetrical so that it sits off centre add an interesting twist?
