Min. Aperture f/1?

Blimey. I bet the DoF at f/1 is so short that it probably wouldn't be that usefull :/

Lord knows why it's so expensive!?
 
Would there even be a sharp area of focus at f/1?
 
I think it's quite funny that the eBay seller goes on and on and on about how it is "THE FASTEST LENS IN THE WORLD". Apparently he's never heard of the Canon 50mm f/0.95. But then he goes on to say "NO SCAM ARTISTS". So untruthful advertising is OK, but other types of scam aren't? Hmm....

Even Canon are telling Porkies!! They are all at it.

Here are the worlds fastest DSLR Lenses, and it's Nikon F/MF mount - Kowa

These are fixed focus lenses, and have to be focussed using a focus rail. Truth told, these are one off, so I suppose they don't really count as production lenses, but they still remain the worlds widest aperture lenses.

Simple really. There are some very special glasses used in the lens. The aspheric elements are ground, not moulded and the manufacturing tolerances are very, very tight indeed. This is a very expensive lens to make and the market is very limited, hence the high price.

The build quality is such that it will outlive you, me and anyone else on this board. I have and occasionally use a Leica M2 that was made in January 1960. It's still going strong.

Until you have handled and used Leica glass, it is hard to justify, but the image quality from these and other Leica lenses is magical.

I have thought about a Noctilust in the past, but for me, I can't justify it. I don't use my existing 50mm enough. The new 0.95 Noctilux retails at £6290.

but why is there not a 25mm f1.2, there is a 50mm 1.8 for £70
 
Leica have just announced 21 and 24mm f1.4 lenses for the M Rangefinder.
They are *very* expensive - £6k each IIRC. There is also a new "affordable" f3.5 24mm at £1.3k.

The problem with producing lenses with extremely large apertures is correcting the distortion and abberations that occur. The problem magnifies significantly with every increase in maximum aperture. With wide angles, you also have to contend with vignetting, which is more apparent at wide apertures.
 
25mm on FF is quite wide and not many people need low light wide angle lenses so its probably because there is a limited market. I think in terms of canon on crop sensors as well, 28mm f/1.8 is one of the fastest and affordable to mass market.
